Commerce major for double with Engineering

Hey commerce board,

Strong maths/science student looking at doing engineering and commerce double degree at monash uni, no idea what to major in or if commerce is even right for me.
I know there are commerce/eng threads here already, and I have read them all, but I still have a few questions.

1. Will I actually learn useful things in a management degree? People have said that management will better equip me for leaderships roles in employment + put me ahead of other grads, but I don't want to waste my major on a subject where the learning isn't actually useful/practical. I want to learn at uni, goddamnit!

2. Will a management degree be like legal studies? I obviously don't mean content, I mean the kind of assessment and study we'd be required to do. Legal for me was basically painful nights of memorising content, trying to make sense of what the study design wanted me to know, and then working my hardest to learn what to write in my answers to practice questions before the SAC. I managed to go okay with an A on the exam and even got a 39 SS, but I didn't love the subject like I love sofdev, spesh, methods and physics. I don't want to be put in that position in uni because it will kill my drive completely.

As for the maths based finance that has been spoken about a fair bit in other posts, I guess I'll see what I think of it if I end up doing first year commerce as opposed to science or something IT with my engineering degree.

Thanks commerce boards!

1. In short, management involves a lot of theory and principles. The problem with any major, let alone management, is that it's hard to see the practical uses or applications unless you find work relating to it (i.e. studying accounting and working at a accounting firm part-time).

2. Management requires you to do a lot of essays, research and reading as part of the assessment. You might encounter mid-semester tests, but that's more relevant to accounting or finance units. APA referencing (and referencing in general) is also a crucial aspect if you study management because you need to source where you get your info from (the Q-manual for Monash, a guide about referencing/reports/essays etc., will become your best friend). Simply stating Google or Wiki won't suffice.
