(Civil) Engineering @ Melbourne Uni?

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of studying civil engineering at Melbourne Uni. I've heard Monash's engineering program is much better, but the time lost travelling to and from Clayton is a real letdown, which is why I'm considering engineering at Melbourne. Recently I've met some people from the course and say that it's too theoretical and lacks practical work. I just would like to hear from those who may know more about their course. Is it is worth completing a Master's degree in engineering there? Are the job prospects any good? Is engineering really that bad at melbourne?

Really looking forward to hear your opinions, thanks for reading.

Comparing engineering at Melbourne vs Monash vs RMIT:

According to Times Higher Education rankings for Engineering and Technology:
Melbourne Uni is ranked 1 in Australia and 32 in the world.
Monash Uni is ranked 3 in Australia and 49 in the world.
RMIT is not on the list (not in the top 100 in the world, nor the top 7 in Australia).

From past students I know: 2 people (close friend and cousin) did engineering at Melbourne Uni (one did chemical, the other did mechanical) and they both had no regrets about choosing Melbourne Uni over other Australian unis. They also both managed to get $80k+/yr jobs within 4 months of graduating. I don't know anyone who's completed engineering at Monash/RMIT though, so I can't make a comparison on this.

I have a few friends currently doing engineering at Melbourne/Monash/RMIT and the general consensus is that RMIT is the most practical but least prestigious of the 3, Melbourne is the most theoretical and most prestigious of the 3 and Monash is in the middle.
2012 ATAR - 86.75
2013 ATAR - 88.50
2014: BSci (Statistics) at RMIT
2015 - 2017: BCom at UoM

Cool thanks for your reply. Btw it says on your profile you transferred to bcom at melbourne uni after a year at rmit science. I was thinking of doing something similar as well. Can you tell me what marks you had to get for uni? Was it hard to transfer?

Rankings are not necessarily the best things to go by. These are formulated more based on academia. I.e., you'll get high rankings based on having a) more academics, b) more journal articles published from your university, c) a good ratio of academics:students etc etc. I don't know much about engineering, and I've heard that it doesn't really matter what uni you go to because of how standardised the course is, but I've also heard that RMIT and Monash Uni are the best unis for engineering in Australia. I've actually heard quite consistently that RMIT is fantastic for engineering.

Your job prospects are looking a lot better than other people's, so I wouldn't worry too much about that :P -- RMIT is about as close as Melbourne though, why not consider there?
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️
