Anyone done VET Engineering?

I’m currently doing psych 1/2 but I don’t want to continue into 3/4 next year. So I’m hunting for a new subject and came across VET studies — more specifically VET Engineering. I’m currently doing systems engineering 3/4 and am hoping to study engineering in uni so it really draws me. The thing is, my school doesn’t do VET, and I also don’t know much about them. So several questions —

1. Has anyone done VET Engineering before? What was your experience like? Would it be helpful for uni engineering?
2. How different is it from systems engineering?
3. As my school doesn’t offer this subject, is there anywhere else where I can do it?
4. Does it contribute to the ATAR?

Also would love to hear from anyone who has done VET studies in general, not just engineering.

Hi Milanander! I don’t have any experience with VET Engineering specifically, but I’ve done a VET before (Music Industry) so here’s my 2 cents.


1. Has anyone done VET Engineering before? What was your experience like? Would it be helpful for uni engineering?

VET subjects in general are considerably more vocational than academic based, and are more suitable for people hoping to go straight into the workforce upon leaving school rather than uni. So I won’t bank on it being too helpful for uni. But it might be really helpful once you start working in the engineering field.


2. How different is it from systems engineering?

Can’t help you too much here, though I’d assume that systems engineering would have more theory and less practical components than its VET counterpart.

Also, upon the completion of any VET subject you get a handy certificate which you can attach to your CV. You don’t get this with the usual VCE subject.


3. As my school doesn’t offer this subject, is there anywhere else where I can do it?

Yep! You can do it at another school which offers the course, or you can do it at a centre/institute which offers it.


4. Does it contribute to the ATAR?

Yep it does! If you did SCORED assessments for your VET study, then you will receive a study score out of 50 just like all VCE subjects, which then gets scaled accordingly and contributes either fully (if it’s in your top 4), or 10% (if it’s in your bottom two).

If you did UNSCORED, it contributes to your ATAR by taking the lowest study score in your top 4 as a 10% increment. It used to be calculated through the average of your top 4, but VTAC changed this recently.
