which uni!? help -.- [engineering]

hey guys,

just got a 2nd round offer at Monash clayton for engineering. currently enrolled at Swinburne Hawthorn for engineering/business

im baffled as to why Swinburne's course enter is so low.. ~76

IMO swinburnes course is alot better then all the other uni's.

you get:
- double degree
- 1 year PAID IBL (industry based learning)
- Hawthorn location.. so its not out in the sticks.

so you come out of uni with a double degree and a year experience vs. a single degree

the only thing that i can see Monash has that Swinburne doesn't is this 'prestige' everyone goes on about.. but is that really going to make a difference? (in engineering where there is a high demand... but i can see how it would with say law but eng??)

oh and i think monash has more types ie chemical, biomed etc... however doesnt effect me since both offer mechanical

Personally, I had the score to do both Business at Swinburne and at Monash. I chose to go to Swinburne though mainly because of the IBL program. Experience will look better to an employee than a prestigious university. Also, Swinburne has great connections within industries.
"And I made that connection between hard work and results, performance. I kept pushing myself seeing how far I could improve myself, and knew if I worked hard I would improve." Nathan Buckley

Monash is ridiculously better than Swinburne in terms of rankings. Monash is ranked EIGHTEENTH in the world for Engineering (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~hws/cgi-bin/MonashRanking.cgi, THES of '04/'05. Unable to find more recent rankings)

Swinburne wouldn't even be in the top 100. Irrespective of the international acclaim of a Monash degree, Monash has far higher resources than Swinburne and would prepare you well for the industry.

HAVING SAID THAT, Swinburne's IBL offer does sound quite alluring, but you've got to ask yourself: Is one year of paid IBL going to compensate for when you're in a workforce, competing against people who have been through Monash's industry placement and have an accredited Monash degree, which, I don't mean to be pretentious, is worth more to an employer than one from Swinburne?

My advice is to accept the offer, but really, weigh the pros and cons for what you want in your life.

personally i like a modern feel to a uni.. which melb uni doesn't offer.
But if you are up for doing a double degree might as well do it at swinburne. since engineering has high demand, i don't think it would really matter that much which uni you go to but more the experience.

hmm was just thinking... the IBL thing is great becuase it will look good to possible employers

BUT so will any engineering degree at the moment(given the demand)... so that whole argument is kind of flawed.

my main concern now is how much really is a business degree going to help realistically

decisions decisions arghhh.

Prav discovered him independently. I don't even talk to him about politics. I have only discussed the more technical aspects of economics with him a few times.

My opinion on this is that Swinburne is gaining prestige pretty fast (of course, that's because they haven't got much prestige to begin with). The IBL is a very valuable asset, so if you are happy with your degree, there isn't much need to change. If you're happy with Swinburne, you don't necessarily need to sacrifice it for a university that everyone else says is better. People have different preferences.

For what it's worth, Monash also offers double-degrees. (It sounded as though you were saying only Swinburne gave you the choice!)

Ninox: How was the camp? I'm going on camp #3 next Friday. :D
