Thank you for your recent enquiry to the University of Melbourne Information Centre.

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensure a transparent selection process, the University of Melbourne has published a selection guarantee for the following two Access Melbourne categories:

* Disadvantaged financial background (SEAS category 5)
* Applicants from rural or isolated areas (SEAS category 6)

Students who complete Year 12 in 2010 and are eligible for one or both of these categories will be guaranteed a Commonwealth supported place in the following undergraduate degrees at the University of Melbourne, provided they meet the course prerequisites and achieve the following ATAR or notional ATAR:

* 78 or above - guarantees a place in Arts, Environments or Science
* 88 or above - guarantees a place in Biomedicine or Commerce

All Access Melbourne applicants are considered for, and may be offered a Commonwealth supported place in a course where their ATAR is lower than the specified minimum ATAR.

Because the circumstances described in Access Melbourne applications are so individual and the decision also relies on your potential to succeed in your chosen course it is not possible to indicate in advance exactly what difference your Access Melbourne application might make during selection.

All applicants who apply for and are eligible for Access Melbourne will automatically be considered for a Melbourne Access Scholarship. A separate scholarship application is not required.

At least 150 scholarships are available. The scholarship entitlements are as follows in the duration of a 3 year undergraduate program:
First year $6500
Second year $4000
Third year $3000

For more information go to http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/scholarships/ugrad/future/access.html

From my schools bulletin:
Quote
YEAR 12 STUDENTS : Important Information for Students Planning to Apply to Uni. Of Melbourne!!!!! This year (my schools name) is classified as an underrepresented school at the University of Melbourne. If you are a local student planning to put in VTAC preferences for Melbourne you must also complete a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application for category 7 - Underrepresented Schools. In addition, if you receive Youth Allowance or your parent/s receive Family Tax Benefit part A you must also complete SEAS Category 5 - Disadvantaged Financial Background. Melbourne will guarantee SEAS Category 5 applicants with an ATAR of 78.00 or above a place in Arts, Environments or Science, and an ATAR of 88.00 or above a place in Biomedicine or Commerce (as long as you also meet prerequisites). If you need clarification, please come to the Careers Office.

hey guys just need some help with deciding what course to do next year
i want to pursue a career in medicine but if i don't make it into monash MBBS im not sure what to put next

I am also in the same boat but im looking into research.

Melbourne science is rather flexible, you have 2 majors in your 2nd year and dont really decide what exactly you want till 3rd year. You can also do engineering via science.

I'd like to STRONGLY NOTE the government only pays for about 7 years of uni only. Then you're full fee.

So Engineering/Biomed is like 4 or 5, melbourne grad medicine is another 4.

Even one year is pricey

how can you do engineering via science?

At UoM, the B.Sci has Engineering Systems majors you can take which lead to a Master of Engineering. You can also do Engineering sequences in other degrees, such as B.Comm, B.BioMed, B.Env...

Well.. up untill your 2nd year in melbourne science you can take 2 majors... so i guess one of your majors could be something biologyish and satisfy your MD prereq and something engineering also.

I'm a big fan of the melbourne science degrees now, i used to hate them but i think its good how you can have 2 majors in the 2nd year and you don't really decide till the 3rd.  First year is also more general if you haven't made up your mind yet. Check out the melbourne science website for more info or just email them, in my experience uni people are very helpful.

I don't see why you'd be bothering with prereqs, as having them won't really increase your chances. You only get 1 interview for graduate medicine, being eligible for UoM won't affect your ability to study at deakin/monash/other universities.
