I was just wondering....

If I brought my mobile phone over to an overseas country, would it work??? And would I still be able to text people back in Australia???

Of course it would! It's called "Global Roaming", the rates might be significantly higher but you can still use your mob :)

Depends on the country and your phone as well. Ie, in Japan only Australian 3G phones with global roaming will be able to work and you pay through the roof for calls anywhere.

Quite often, it's cheaper to buy a local prepaid SIM and chuck that in your phone and use that account to text/call people back home so you can gauge how much you're spending.

Depends on the type of phone it is. If it is GSM, most likely it will work, but if it is TDMA (used in the US quite a bit), not a hope.

You're aware that TDMA is just a channel access method, right? :P

Be aware that receiving calls will cost money. Receiving SMSes will be free. Sending either will cost a lot more than usual. (This is with Telstra)

You just need to ring them up and activate it on your account.

As I said, buy a local pre-paid SIM if possible.

Yeah, but it is also a way of referring to the system the North Americans created which is not part of the GSM family.

Optus doesn't offer international roaming. Telstra does, but they'll charge you more while you're overseas. Your best bet is to buy a prepaid SIM once you're over there.

I'm with 3 and when I went overseas I had fairly inexpensive phone calls.

Did you consider skype with a bit of credit on that? I'm pretty sure you can SMS too.

Of course it would only be useful depending on your circumstances.
