Ah, but have you read the books?   I'm sure they've held up for longer...
Seriously, I've read almost everything under the sun by Tolkien, but despite plenty of opportunity I still haven't watched more than the first film (twice).

Actually, what I remember about the films coming out was people who would never have read the books starting calling each other "Fool of a Took" and similar endearments...

HSC exams. It was fun getting bombarded and answering 30-60 questions per day

Yes I have, haha. I've read the trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, The Tale of Beren and Luthien, and The Fall of Gondolin. My #1 favourite album, Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian, is also based on The Silmarillion

I prefer the books, and I agree that they're more timeless, but I still love the movies  (although I'm salty at the changes to Saruman). They weren't entirely faithful but they're superbly entertaining, and very well made (seriously, the effort put in for prop design, costumes, location scouting, amd whatnot is phenomenal)

Good for them haha. The films have introduced scores more people to the books. Not only that, but not everyone enjoys reading or sometimes, more specifically, Tolkien's flowery prose. The film trilogy has made this story accessible to a whole new demographic. It's great
