I think most ANers are aware that most of my posts in this thread are banter, jokes, or borderline shitposts, so as such, I hope the next few lines of temporary seriousness will have an impact.
I, like a lot of teenagers and ANers, struggle with depression and other mental health issues. This has been an ongoing issue for most of my teenaged years, and stems from some unpleasant events that occured during my childhood. Like a lot of people, I tried resolving this without professional help using some unhealthy mechanics, such as isolating myself, hard drug abuse, aggression, etc. It wasn't until very early in this year that I started seeking professional help, and it wasn't until the past few months that I started taking it very seriously. I've had regular GP/psych visits, various therapies, and have changed my lifestyle. These have all helped, but it wasn't until very recently (as in, this week) that I decided to try something I always had a very adverse attitude towards: group therapy.
Thanks to my doctor and a trusted friend, I put aside my embarassement and went to a support group for victims of childhood trauma, and holy shit, it was worth it. I've only been once so far, but it's lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders just knowing a) such things happen to other people, b) people can get over it, and c) a group of people who can actually relate rather than just empathise. I didn't even talk during my first session, as I wasn't brave enough, but merely listening was hugely cathartic. I implore anyone avoiding this due to embarassement to please give it a go, as not only is it free, and comes without any obligation to talk, but it's probably had the biggest effect of any treatments so far for me, and if this could have the same effect for people I care about -- such as those on ATAR Notes -- then I am more than happy to be the one suggesting it.
You can find support groups for various things either by searching online, pamphlets at local community centres, or by asking your GP. It's worth it. Happy to answer any questions via post or PM.
