Bio 3/4 without 1/2 ?
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:44:28 am »

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of picking up Bio 3/4 next year in Year 12 if I drop Literature, but I haven't done Bio since Year 9 science. I'll probably be behind everyone in my school so would an easier subject like HHD be a better option?
I'm a bit more interested in Bio than HHD and the latter also scales down a lot, but it must be easier to do well in.
I also only have four subjects next year but the other 3 (Eng, Methods, Chem) require a lot of hard work, so I guess it's a question of time management.

If you're sure you want to drop Literature, then I'd definitely recommend Biology. Try not to perceive a subject as being 'easier' than another, but rather choose one that you are most interested in.

Subject scaling is merely a representation of how 'strong' that cohort is in all their other subjects. And remember that 'difficulty' is, more often than not, a subjective matter.

Personally, Biology is 'harder' for me than Chemistry or Methods despite it scaling up much less (1 vs ~7). But it's different for everyone.

So if you're interested in Bio, then go for it. In terms of being behind, there isn't anything in Units 1/2 that you might need to know but it will be covered again in Units 3/4.

Hope that helps.

I dropped literature for Biol. Best decision I made! (Very doable)

I picked up biol this year as a 3/4 not really knowing what I was getting myself into and have found no really severe complications or found it impossible.

I picked up bio 3/4 this year, and trust me, you couldn't know less about bio than I when I started this year... hahaha but yeah, I'm getting in the 90% range for my SAC's, so it's very doable  :)

I picked up Biology 3/4 this year, and I found that my void of knowledge was minimal. I have been averaging high 90s in my SACs, so it's a completely feasible move. :) Just make sure that you familiarize yourself organelles, cell structure, etc. and you will be fine.
If you are sincerely interested in what you are learning, then studying will not be bothersome. (And you will need to do a lot of it!)

Good luck for bio next year if you decide to pick it up.

I've done unit 1/2 and am currently doing 3/4. There is a lot of overlap but I feel that everything is covered again so you should be fine going straight into 3/4. :)

thanks so much everyone! I think I will pick up bio next year if my teachers allow it. :)

Also, are there any exam skills I should know? I've heard bio focuses a lot on analysis as well as just knowing stuff.

Know what terms are accepted as abbreviations by examiners and which have to be written out in full.

Very doable! Plenty of my year 11 friends picked it up as an accelerated without ½ and are doing fine.
Just try to get familiar with the terminology and key concepts of ½ over the summer holidays, for confidence.
Good luck. :)

I skipped 1/2 Biol straight into 3/4 and found it very doable, the only topic I struggled with a bit was plants, since they had pretty much covered the whole topic the year before.  If you like biol, you should do fine. :)

When you are learning the material make sure you know it well and understand it as it makes it easier to apply.

I did that this year. I'm maintaining about an 80 average and above the class average. It is alot of work, there's heaps to memorise and there's ten sacs, five per unit. The final exam is ~41 pages long, so prepare for alot of work. That being said, I love this subject. It's well been worth dropping IT Apps for this. Plus it scales up, but you shouldn't base choosing a subject solely based on scaling.
