How do assessors mark?
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:02:48 pm »

Just curious to know if anyone has an idea how strict the markers are.
I.e. For one of the exams, the answer was silk tie and it was one mark
Does that mean you get 0 for just having written "tie"?

Also, if it's a 2 mark question
and you give 3 reasons with 1 wrong and the other 2 right
How many marks would you get?
Would I be safer in writing all 3? Or just picking two

Any help is appreciated

I think for the 2mark questions, if it asks for 2 reasons specifically, put two reasons, but if it just says "why is..." without saying "give 2 reasons" then you could put down more than 2.

and yes, you'd probably get 0 for just "tie"
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.

They don't take marks off for wrong answers, so put as many down as you can.

And you would get 0, must be a silk tie.

Remember, with these answers (speaking as a German student) its about AS MUCH APPROPRIATE INFORMATION as possible. They want to separate the men/women from the boys/girls. So when you do the exam, pretend the examiners will be as pedantic as hell.

Do they take marks off if you include 'too much' information? It is, at times, hard to tell whether a certain piece of information is relevant and worth putting down.

Don't think they do, unless the information is incorrect.

The most important thing is to ANSWER THE QUESTIOn.

I read a brilliant essay that got 9/15, because it went of topic and didn't fill the requirements the question gave. Personally I would stick to answering the question. If they say 3, I give three.

Also in writing task, don't go over. My teacher at the VSL (a former assessor) told our class that if you write more than 300 words, they are instructed to stop reading after 300.

Concur. This is true. 301 words even is heavily penalised.

That's not what our teacher told us (although to some extent it's true). If they suspect that a piece is over the limit, they do a word count. However, if the piece doesn't look over the limit, chances are they won't count.

Meh, somewhat. I ended up going to a party last night and slept over the night. Got some revision done on Saturday and now that my brain is functioning normally I'll get some more done tonight. There's also Monday as well.

I know FOR A FACT that there is a ten percent limit.

My teacher is an assessor, what they do is, if it looks a bit long or short they count the words.

Concur. This is true. 301 words even is heavily penalised.

^ This is ridiculous. Check for yourselves, the "high scoring responses" are often 310-320 words in the assessors report.

But of course attempt to be maximum 320
