Q re: Preferences

I don't have any auto-allocated classes.

What I did was put my first pref as the one I wanted
Put my 2nd-5th pref as clashes with the 1st (or 2nd) prefs
Put my 6th pref as my next best pref

would that work?

It's generally a bad idea having anything clash with your first preferences...

Get all your 2nd/3rd/4th/5th preferences to clash or, alternatively, abuse it by picking classes that are already >200% full as your 2nd/3rd/etc preferences, clash the ones that aren't >200%.

And yes, make sure you chuck your "real" preference in as 6th.

Also... if there are two or three tute times that you would happily do (like... there's really no difference in the level of convenience for you between a 1pm and 2pm tute... like... you have "equal first" preferences) then be sure to put these preferences as 1st and 2nd, *then* put in the fake preferences as already discussed.

Thanks for the reply but I still have one question

How would they determine who gets 1st pref and who doesn't?

I know that they allocate it based on class size but the system would also want to minimise clashes so therefore if I were to clash every 2nd-5th pref with my 1st pref then wouldn't the system have no choice but to give me either the 1st or 6th pref or I'd have an incalculable number of clashes.

I've looked at those other popular timeslots and a lot of them are inconvenient (means i have a tute right before a lecture) but I will try and see if I can do some reallocating

It's randomly allocated, but the system will do its best to
1) give you as many first preferences as possible
2) avoid clashes where possible.

This is how I've gotten all my first preferences every single semester by making sure my later prefs were a massive clash-fest

@fyrefly
can you elaborate on why we shouldnt have 2nd/3rd/4th etc preferences clash with 1st preference?

Because then allocate says, "Okay, I'm not going to give you your first preference for AFC1000 tute. I'm going to give you your second preference."

Then it says, "Okay, your first preference for ECC1000 clashes with your newly allocated tute time for AFC1000. I'm going to give you your 5th preference for ECC1000 instead."

Of course, your 5th preference for ECC1000 happens to be at 8am on a Friday morning, or some other similarly inconvenient time =)

Basically what I'm saying is: because if you don't get your first preference for one of your units, and your first preferences clash with other preferences for the rest of your units, it could fk over your entire timetable... not just the one unit =)

Also... none of you should be asking me, of all people, for advice regarding Allocate+.

Alloclash hates me, and fks me over almost every semester :)

FYREFLY v. ALLOCLASH: THE EPIC SAGA

Fucking shit timetable.

Wow, I feel for you. 4 hour breaks.

Pfft... I've heard of longer:

I hate my Thursdays... a 10am class and a 5pm class, both auto-allocated courtesy of Alloclash. Thus I think I win with the longest break: 7 HOURS. I think Thursday will be my 'study day' where I park my ass in the library and hit the assignments. I also must do 4 hours of commuting everyday, which makes going to the only lecture I have on a Wed morn seem rather ...erm... yeah. Lucky I think I'll like business law, hey Excal? :P

(Clearly, I also sucked at maths back then too, for anyone who picked up on it.)

Here's are a few more samples of my ongoing saga with Alloclash:

But... are those timetables confirmed...?

I've got a AFC1000 FRIDAY tute... WTF.

I didn't put any Friday times as my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th OR 6th preferences.
I do NOT want 2g all the way 2 uni 4 a single tute.

1st preference my ass.

Now I have 2 wake up early 2moz (on my day off) 2 try and get out of that stupid tute.

/rant.

takes very long, 2 hrs by public transport, and 1 and a half hours by car. So yeah, thats another reason too, sometimes theres a random lecture for a maths subject on tuesday for 60 mins, which means itd take me 4 hours travelling time just for 1 lecture which wouldnt even help me very much, so its definitely not worth going to. the only reason im going to monash is coz i have a scholarship and i get to do commerce too, or else id be at melbourne~

This.

I have been absolutely fked over this semester... I only have ten contact hours a week, right?
Alloclash has given me FOUR days this semester... two of those days have only a single hour-long class.

I'm going to have to try and get them manually swapped by coordinators... demand for my preferred days was about 300%, so it's gonna be futile stalking Alloclash waiting to see if someone switches... -.-"

Sleeping patterns... lol... there are no patterns to my sleep.

Fyrefly I challenge you to a shitty timetable battle!

I have a single one hour 8am lecture on mondays and fridays!

Except I did it on purpose (work purposes) and I think I might rule it down to just one 8am start on Monday.

what if 70% of our 1st preference slots are auto-allocated? can we make our 2nd/3rd/4th etc preferences clash with the auto-allocated so that the system has no choice but to give me my 1st preference slots for that unit?

That's fine. If something is auto-allocated, make your 2nd/3rd/etc preferences clash with it.
