when i type in
solve(2*a+4*b=10,a,b)

i get the answer a=-(2*c26-5) and b=c26

what does this c26 business mean? how can i get it to show the proper answer?

i'm using the ti-nspire cas calculator

It's a parameter, meaning that there are an infinite number of solutions. You can't get a unique answer for a and b with one equation. You can only get a relationship between the two.
So a=-(2*b-5).
You need another equation with a and b if you want unique answers.
