VCAA Methods marking?

Hey guys, i recently received my statement of marks for methods. In exam 2, i found that i had lost two marks for getting a questions wrong, which is fair enough. However, then i found out that i lost the next question (3 mrks) because i used my answer from the previous one. Pictures are easier so i have em here.

With that picture, i found the area of 1 (the curve and the straightline graph) - i panicked:P. We were supposed to find area 2. the Line with the x-axis. The questions are:

So i lost the first 2 mark question, which is fair enough. However, shouldnt i get the next 3 marks in the following question (consequential marks?)

Anyways, i just wanted to know, what i should do now.

PS: Im positive that this is what happend.

Why does it matter my working in c i) (im not attacking you, im just naturally curious)

Also, doesnt it only matter that i found 'a' value of a, so that i can use it in the next part?
And shouldnt i get consequential marks for it in the next part nomatter if its wrong?

Am i being totally naive here? LOL.

Does anybody have any idea of what to do? Should i give VCAA a call, or just let it slide?

it looks to me like you should at least get partial credit.

soz, sort of off topic but didnt want to make a new thread.

if you wait for the assessment report and pick up on a mistake that vcaa had made, is it possible to get it rechecked? if its of any significance

Your working out for c) i probably wasnt right then. If it was right, despite the eventual wrong answer, you would get full marks.

very rarely are consequential marks awarded...i was told that only where questions specified "hence" as in "hence find the exact value" are marks given even if the previous part is wrong. because in your particular question, there is no 'hence' unlikely you will be given extra credit. i know its sounds anal but its apparently what vcaa sticks to so everyone doesnt go complaining about extra marks on questions

If you're worried about it, ask your teacher or contact the VCAA directly. However, you probably won't receive consequential marks if the answer you used made it much easier to work out the 3 mark question than the real answer. It's also possible that you worked it out incorrectly. I've never heard of the 'hence' thing, but that also sounds like a very VCAA thing to do.

Possibly. It's really unlikely to happen I'd imagine.

Consequential marks are only awarded if you show working of equal difficulty to the required answer. For example, lets just say that the answer to question 1 is and for question 2 you must sketch the graph of the equation found in question 1. If for question 1 you got and you sketched it for question 2, despite the fact that you have sketched the graph of the equation you found in the previous question, you have simplified the question so VCAA will NOT award you the marks. This is probably what happened in your case.

Does that make sense?

Hey, thanks for the replies. It's good to get some insight. No, i dont think it was easier. If i call VCAA, do i ask for the maths department- or assessment department?

I'll keep you posted.

EDIT: im not looking for the whole 3 marks, but even 1.5 marks would make a difference.

I do recall some "hence" questions (in Science papers too) do not award consequential marks...

and even if you got some extra marks, is it too late for them to do anything?

In Exam 1, for the last question, I lost one mark for finding an incorrect inverse.
Since you need the inverse for the last part of the last question, I used the incorrect inverse, but I used correct working up until the final line. I slipped again here -.-... but amazingly enough, this slip gave me the 'correct' answer. I got 2/3 marks for the final question, losing 2 marks over both questions... so lucky (I didn't get the statement of marks, but I know this is the only way it could have worked)

How did you get that picture???
