Why did you start learning a musical instrument?

I'm just curious to find out why people started learning. Did your parents make you? Did someone inspire you? You thought it was cool?

Personally I only wanted to learn the flute coz I saw some random chick on tv playing one and thought it was cool (I was 9 ok).
Then I decided to learn the oboe coz my friend played it really well and I thought it couldn't be that hard....oh how naive I was lol.

Well, the story is long, complicated and quite personal - but put very short: I had some issues with primary school, and I found playing keyboard was a release for me...so I kept on it. I stopped after Gr. 5, though, as the company that was providing the tuition folded.

Then came Year 7. In my Accelerated Learning class, there was a compulsory band program where I picked up the baritone saxophone. Since moving to MHS, I've picked up even more instruments and the love affair got stronger :)

I just really wanted to learn piano and started keyboard lessons at school.. I think '96 and then moved to the piano the next year. I think I really wanted to learn because my brother and sister were learning at the time and I used to listen in on their lessons (not their practise since they never did any practise)

Then in my first year at high school I was given a saxophone to play with for the compulsory music and band lessons and loved it

started learning piano when i was six, in grade 1. did yamaha piano until yr7 - passed my grade 5 AMEB, then decided that i hated practising so i was going to quit.

took up guitar about 15 or so, must've been yr9/10. used to steal my little sister's classical guitar and teach myself to play. within six months i was better than her even though she'd been playing for years, so she cracked it and quit playing guitar  ;D my christmas present that year was a proper electric...

and then there i was a couple of years later doing my music performance exam for guitar  :) good times.

i still play a fair bit of piano too, just no way near as much as the guitar.

started piano a few days before my 5th birthday - was forced by grandparents.
came to Australia - was forced to keep going by parents.
I only started actually enjoying piano in about year 9 when I switched to my current awesome teacher :P

as for oboe I randomly decided to start learning it in year 6 or something but I quit cos it was boring and cos I almost failed grade 6 :P

Piano aged 5-13 cos we had one and my Dad is a keen musician [his Mum was a piano teacher.]
   Guitar 13- now intermittently.
French Horn for year in yr 8. I'm ashamed to say I gave it up because it was considered "uncool". It was probably my best instrument as well; I [so I'm told] made a sound on a tuba when I was 2.

   Maybe ......... Zither :-\
