Hi there. Just wondering: when a uni course says they need a prerequisite of 35 in English for example, what happens if you get a raw score of 35 but it gets scaled down to like a 34. Would you still meet the prerequisite and be able to get it?
VCE: 2018-2020
ATAR: 99.4
(finally get to do this!)

You'd still meet the prerequisites. They always use your raw score, not the scaled score.

They go by the raw scores.

Basically anywhere study scores are listed it is the norm for those to be raw scores and if it is the scaled score they should include "scaled".

So what happens if you get a raw score of 30 in methods but it gets scaled up to 35 and the course has a prerequisite of 35 for methods.
Does that mean you can't get in?

Unfortunately no, they look at your allocated raw score for the year you did it. So that means you need a 35 RAW that may scale up to 40 in terms of +5.

Sorry to bump into this threat, but what's the point of scaling in the first place if you have to get the raw scores to get into a course, despite your scaled scores? (is it for your ATAR or something?)

Scaling is needed to make atar calculation fair for people who different subjects - for example, it’s easier to get a raw 40 in further than in spesh. But prerequisites are just for that specific subject - there’s no need to make it fair for different people doing different subjects so scaling isn’t needed.

continuing on from what PF has said - raw scores are a much better way of evaluating how someone has done in relation to the state as a whole for the subject e.g. 30+ = top 50%, 35+ = top 23% and so on.

Scaling is there so that each study score from DIFFERENT subjects are comparable - there is no reason for this to happen when considering the subjects in isolation.
