Hey I'm in Year 9 and this year I'm going to try out for John Monash Science School... but is it a good school? Like I haven't exactly heard of their results as of yet and I know my interests are in the Sciences but is it a good school and if so... what should I expect on the test?

John Monash is pretty good from what I've heard (although obviously MHS and Mac.Rob are far more superior ;) )!

You haven't heard of their results because they haven't had a graduating year year :) They had some results last year, but that may have been for their yr11s (I think).

As for the test:
Quote
John Monash Science School (JMSS)

Statement on Entry Tests

John Monash Science School has received a number of enquiries about the format and content of the tests which will be administered by Edutest to determine entry to the school. In response to these requests, the following statement has been prepared. Please note that to ensure that integrity of the testing process, and equity for all applicants, no further information about the tests will be provided prior to the administration of the tests.

John Monash Science School is a specialist school which focuses on science, mathematics and associated technologies. The students who will benefit most from attending the school will be proficient in mathematics, be able to express themselves clearly in English, to apply scientific reasoning to problems and to think logically and coherently.

Therefore, there will be tests assessing the following:
• Academic potential
• Literacy
• Scientific aptitude
• Mathematics and numeracy
Some practice material is available on the Edutest website.

In relation to the test(s) of scientific reasoning, JMSS and Edutest, are not supplying any specific details of the format or content. JMSS does not want students to rote learn previously prepared responses, and therefore expect to change the format of tests regularly to ensure that the process is fair to all applicants.

What we have found, as a result of the tests, is that those who are successful are curious about science, interested in the world around them and well grounded in mathematics and English, and although these are not specific criteria for entry, they expect that this will also be true of those offered places for the coming year.

I think the format of the JMSS test changes each year, so there's not really that much I can tell you (I was really surprised when we weren't tested on literacy). If you're genuinely interested in Science and Maths then you'll easily get in, you might just need to brush up on your skills a bit. Also expect the unexpected when test day comes, so practice your literacy skills or at least work on your essay writing.

Really though, the test isn't too hard and it's nothing to get worked up about :)

In terms of whether it's a good school, umm...... there's a big workload compared to other schools and a fair bit of pressure, but you'll be part of a very strong cohort which is good I guess :P Also we use technology in almost all of our classes (tablets, iPads, etc) so that's something you might want to think about.

John Monash is pretty good from what I've heard (although obviously MHS and Mac.Rob are far more superior ;) )!

Yeah no graduating year yet, but our yr 11 results were pretty good and will probably be even better this year
