Questions about Nossal

Hey!
Im going to attend nossal this year as a year 9 and I was hoping if someone from nossal could answer some of my questions :) .

How are the teachers at nossal generally?
Are there any specific teachers I should look out for?
I hear a lot about ‘adult learning environment’ what exactly does that mean?
Which ethnicities will be at nossal?
Which subjects are most enjoyable?
How was the year 9 camp?
If you went to the trip to Japan, how was it?
Which 1&2 subjects can be done in year 10?
is there like a ‘formal night’ in year 12?
Is everyone super competitive in terms of studying?
What is something that Nossal has that other/most schools don’t?
Are there like ‘relationships’ or not really?
Everyone is going for med?
How are the clubs/societies?
Strict uniform?

Hi, I also got into Nossal and will be attending either you as well. Because of this, I'm not too sure of most of the questions you asked either, but some of them can be answered from the videos they posted on the school compass dashboard, so you should check it out if you haven't done so already 😀. I can answer a few of your questions though.

I've heard that their uniform is pretty strict and that there are lots of clubs and societies (SRC, debating, Bollywood, some environment ones and badminton to name a few). I think the adult learning environment means that you take charge of your own learning  (so the teacher doesn't need to instruct you every so often), the learning space is more modern and university-like, there's more trust in students to take responsibility of their work and stuff like that.

Don't know much about the camp, teachers or later years subjects, and I'm in pretty much the same boat as you at this stage. Hopefully someone who is currently attending or has attended Nossal HS can provide a further update on your questions.

P.S. Have you bought your uniform, stationery and books? The cost of the blazer and the laptop is so high lol!! ;D :D

I hear a lot about ‘adult learning environment’ what exactly does that mean?

Damn Nossal trying to sound smart even though they aint. (I'm joking, it's a great school) All they mean is that you are responsible for your learning and you will be in charge. They'll give you assignments and tests but you better study and you won't be able to muck around. It sounds intimidating but it's just like any secondary school and they won't spoon-feed you like in primary school. Also not everyone goes for med although nearly everyone aims for it. A ton of kids drop the idea by year 11-ish because they feel that they're not competitive enough, smart enough, not interested and for a ton of other reasons. If you are interested in it, go for it. Otherwise, don't care about it. There are so many other careers that are good and med's not the only one. The ethnicities at Nossal aren't that diverse. You'll find that >90% of the students there will be Asian or from the South Asian Subcontinent and some of them will be of European background, African or from North or South America. I would rather not answer why, but it is what it is and it isn't important. In the end, you're all humans and that shouldn't matter. Idk what you mean by relationships. If you mean romantic or intimate ones, from what I've heard, there's not much (compared to other schools in Victoria) and if you mean friendships, then of course. For enjoyable subjects, that's up to you. All the answers you get for that question may not align with what you like so experiment and try to have fun! As for competitiveness, it's sort of what defines a selective school (A selective school is a school that admits students on the basis of some sort of selection criteria, usually academic - Straight from the world's most reliable website: Wikipedia). Don't worry about not fitting in as that's everyone at the start but remember that you may have been one of those smart kids from your old school but here, you might be the average kid as well. I can't speak too much about Nossal cause I don't go there and so I might not be able to entirely answer this question but try not to worry about your classmate's marks as in the end you can't change their future but you can change your own. Enjoy year 9 and 10 and have fun. It's not going to be that hard- if you could pass four exams with hard questions and immense time pressure, I'm sure you can survive going to a selective school. Good luck!

How are the teachers at mhs generally?
Some are really really lazy and seem like they are just at school to survive before their retirement, other teachers are brilliant and really are invested in your learning (maths psych and eco departments!)
Are there any specific teachers I should look out for?
Don't want to name names in terms of negative teachers. I really liked Mr Ong as a psych teacher, I think Mr Levick was brilliant and amazing for being head of methods (The SACs were really good and he made us finish the course by August so we had plenty of time for revision). If you ever see an old man that has a shiny bald head walk around school thats flanno probably every student's (pre his retirement) favourite teacher.
I hear a lot about ‘adult learning environment’ what exactly does that mean?
Which ethnicities will be at mhs?
Mostly South Asian, Middle Eastern or East Asian ethnicity. There actually is a surprisingly high number of Anglo or Eastern European people (still in the minority though).
Which subjects are most enjoyable?
In year 9 and 10 go for the easiest subjects (electives) with the least amount of workload. In year 9 you can't really choose in year 10 that means doing stuff like music craft (literally just watched brooklyn 99 every lesson), drama and photography (walking out to botanic gardens and taking funny pics with friends). In terms of VCE thats up to you
How was the year 9 camp?
Your standard camp but its really rewarding compared to other schools because its only with your own class meaning that most likely year 9 camp is when you first branch out and make friends that aren't just from your old school.
If you went to the trip to Japan, how was it?
Which 1&2 subjects can be done in year 10?
Only music performance
is there like a ‘formal night’ in year 12?
yes
Is everyone super competitive in terms of studying?
No especially in year 9 and 10, no one does any work and people really just screw around in class. Come VCE you get in this environment in which the average student would probably be disappointed with a 40 or below in their year 11 subject but generally the cohort is super super supportive and really looks down upon ppl that are toxic. Also in VCE there is still a large number of people who aren't really as invested in their VCE studies because they have more important things going on (maybe a hobby, or their trying to get into a university in America etc.)
What is something that mhs has that other/most schools don’t?
Sporting interstate exchanges. We do sporting exchanges with Sydney Boys High School (well used to), North Sydney Boys High School and Adelaide High School. The atmosphere that you get from watching the basketball or futsal or soccer games where the gym or oval is packed with students watching is something that i'll really miss. Also travelling interstate and becoming friends with people from other states and going out with them to their respective cities is a really great experience. Also singing! I know that a lot of students see massed singing as a huge hassle but missing out on speech night in the last two years when you're on stage singing your heart out with 1200 fellow mhs all around you is one of the things i really am sad about in terms of covid casualties. House chorals (house massed singing competition) is really really high quality too and one of my most memorable moments was singing the set song in year 9 for our house (which in my humble opinion was the best house chorals performance i've witnessed out of the three i participated in) and winning house chorals
Are there like ‘relationships’ or not really?
yep just like any other school
Everyone is going for med?
I would say around a quarter of the students are going for med and around a third or quarter of them will get into med through undergrad
How are the clubs/societies?
Really great largely student run so not much support from the school.
Strict uniform?
The year level coordinators are really annoying with this but most days you'll get away with wearing whacky uniform

Wait so only music performance can be done in year 10? I thought Bio 1/2 could be done in year 10 as well as Methods (unsure)?

Also is it true that at MHS you are forced to do 6 VCE Subjects?

You can only do music performance 1/2 but you can do bio3/4 psych3/4 geo3/4 busman etc. without doing the 1/2 in year 10. Methods 3/4 is only reserved to like genius maths students who were personally picked by their year 10 maths teachers and interviewed by Dr Shin (the scary maths teacher).

Also is it true that at MHS you are forced to do 6 VCE Subjects?
if by 6 VCE subjects in year 12 nah you have the option to do 1 3/4 in year 11 if by 6 VCE subjects overall I think yeah but you could always just put zero effort into the subjects that you were gonna drop anyway. If you wanted to do more than 6 subjects theres no point because thats just extra unnecessary workload as only 6 subjects count towards your aggregate

Maybe they'd allow u to a drop a subject in year 12 but i don't think timetabling would be able to fit more than 6 subjects in a year and they don't really let you take 2 3/4s in year 11 apart from the exception of doing a language outside of school and music performance.

Yeah, it's kinda sad how they don't allow that but in a way it makes sense
