Which book for units 3/4?

When I got the booklist for the math methods textbook after enrolling it had the essential as opposed to the jacaranda plus that I got. When I looked at the essential version it didn't seem as clear as the jacaranda which wasn't in my booklist. It's such a pain in the ass trying to get the exact one.

So I'm asking you which book should I be using? Jacaranda or essential?

Depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking at quality of Q's, then essential would be right for you.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Our school requires Maths quest (probably because some of our teachers wrote it haha) but they do say that if you're aiming particuarly high, essentials should also be used.

I used essentials for 1/2 methods, I had no problems with it personally - fairly detailed yet concise explanations, and decent questions (in my opinion). I've been able to do methods 3/4 and specialist on my own so far, as well, so that's probably a good sign.

I've not used jacaranda before, but comparing maths quest and essentials, essentials was definitely better.

Here's what I've heard and confirmed for myself:

Essentials: Clear and concise points, brilliant questions, sometimes going beyond the scope of the course to train you to think laterally. Some of my friends credited Essentials practice with getting them through this year's exam because of the problem-solving style it perpetrated. I find the examples a bit vague sometimes, however.

Heinemann: I found the colourful chapter introductions helpful (yes, childish I know >.<), and as for reading to understand Maths, I thought this was the best. The rest use slightly more awkward language, and 'speak' more directly to a student with all the assumed knowledge down pat. Questions are not challenging enough for the astute VCE student however, imo.

Mathsquest (Jacaranda): Good calculator examples. Better questions than Heinemann, not as good as Essentials. Layout sometimes confusing.

MathsWorld: Good examples when given; usually leaves out examples for questions they subsequently ask you to do though, which can sometimes get a bit frustrating. Questions on par with Mathsquest, perhaps slightly easier.

Hope that helped somewhat ^-^

Feel free to ask any questions related to the above; and I AM SOOO SORRY to all the people who've inboxed me since last year for my non-responsiveness, I forgot completely about this forum for quite awhile.

For 2012 and 2013 Year 12ers, I wish yous all the best!!! :D

Thats exactly what my schools doing, we're using the heinemann specialists advanced, because the teacher said the people at my school had trouble with the essentials questions. There is the essentials methods book on here, just use the search engine, i found the e-book that way :)
