Year 10 subjects

Hey there!

I'm a year 10 hoping to get into undergraduate medicine. Now that I am choosing my subjects, I feel as though my subjects are too "easy" to get me into a medical university. Even though I know I can do well in my subjects I'm unsure about them. Do universities check your other subjects aside from the prerequisites and overall ATAR? These are my subjects:
- Maths Methods 1/2
- Bio 3/4
- Chem 1/2
- English 1/2
- Accounting
- German

I just want to get a feel for accounting and if I am not doing well in it or enjoying it, I would switch to 3/4 Extended Investigation in year 12.
What do you guys think? Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Thankyou

Unis only check what's relevant! As long as you've got your prerequisites under control, there's nothing to worry about. It's good that you feel like your subjects are easy, but you don't want to slack off because you're overconfident- that's a fast track to some pretty average results ::) .

If you don't end up enjoying accounting, I have heard that extended investigation is very fun and engaging. I know a couple of people who did it and they loved it a lot. I don't actually know much about it otherwise. Lots of med people around here (I'm not though) who could probably give specific advice.

Hey Blueivy_2000! So, for getting into undergraduate med (at least at Monash), there are certain prerequisite subjects that you have to do to be considered, that you would know about - so you need to get at least a 30 in Chemistry, and at least a 35 in English. Apart from that, it actually doesn't matter what subjects you do - the uni isn't going to be concerned about that, as long as you do pretty well overall. So, by doing subjects you enjoy, and that you are interested in (which it sounds like that's what you're doing, so that's great!), you're more likely to do better. Hope this helps a bit!

and at least a 35 in English
Clarification: it's a 35 in English as an Additional Language (EAL), but 30 in any other English (English, English Language, Literature) :)

Honestly I think it's just super important to pick what you want to do and will enjoy! As long as you have the prerequisites for a course, it doesn't matter what other subjects you do :) If you pick subjects you enjoy, you boost your chances of scoring highly, which is needed for med. The great thing about year 11 is that it's a bit of a trial year, you can change your subjects around if you want to with no real complications, and you can always try something in year 11, then if you decide you don't like it, you can pick something else in year 12.

I didn't do Extended Investigation, but I've heard that it's great for critical thinking and reasoning, which are important life skills to have, particularly if you're interested in doing med! Plus, learning about research would be really helpful for the future, because you'll have to learn about it at uni, so you'd be getting a headstart. :)

Good luck! :D
