what's moving like? did you bring most of your stuff with you? had them shipped up? what about the first few weeks of being independent?
You don't really need to bring all of your stuff with you, you probably don't have enough room for it all in a typical dorm anyway. I had about a car load of stuff, but that was probably more than I needed at the time.

I love ANU but I am starting to realise that uni is not just about studying ... is ANU socially invigorating?

Get into one of the ANU dorms ie. Bruce. It will socially invigorate your brains out.

Thanks! I applied to Johns - praying I get it!
For your sake I hope you don't get it (Johns is a terrible place to live).

Lol a bit late for me to back out now :) What makes you say Johns isn't good?
I found the people there the most friendly and apparently it has a good sporting reputation and I can't cook for **** so the self-catered colleges were out of the question.
Which college are you at?
I wanna be the very best, like no-one ever was. DUN DUN DUN.

humph is a Burgmann elitist, momentarily ignore him for a second although everyone judges the Johns people, I will admit.

Basically Johns is the most party-intensive college on-campus, with a fair few hazing rituals (everyone has to wear bibs in O-Week) and copious amounts of drinking.  That said, I've actually met a lot of really cool people who live there - you just have to make sure that you're okay with spending a lot of time doing stupid things and living a bit of a party animal lifestyle.  And yes, it's the best for sports (jocks like to party!).

Thanks so much, that was what I was hoping to hear! Are you living in a college or at Uni Lodge?

Unilodge (originally applied for Bruce, but I like unilodge enough to stay here next year).

WRT your stuff, there's not that much you need, and you can buy a lot of it as well when you get here. I personally took the car up full of my stuff (including bulk cooking items such as rice, cooking utensils, blankets, sheets and lots of other things). Unilodge sucks bad for parking though so I do not have my car here ($88 per month). I could swear I've written lots about my thoughs on unilodge so I'm not going to type up an essay for you (sorry).

??? I went to Bruce... (and a fair while ago too - I was a first year in 2007). Anyway, my point was that Johns is all well and good if you're a bit of a wanker (and in all fairness, some of my good friends are charming wankers), but that's all it really caters for - if you're not into that kind of scene, then prepare to be ostracised.

Question: how/when do you know if you have a place in the colleges? And how likely are you to get your first choice?

I am starting to feel a bit worried about this now - I am sure its just a stereotype and not everyone's like that but I just assumed that the people who go to ANU aren't general wankers because they would have had to move interstate to go there and therefore be serious about their education and not just want to get pissed 24/7.
I wish they gave out a college sterotype brouchure at the open day - I didn't get these vibes going to Johns at all, I thought everyone seemed lovely and down-to-earth ...

You can check on the anu accommodation website or something. They'll send an email. Where did you apply to?

It's really not that hard to quantify..., but I believe that being raped once is not as bad as being raped five times, even if the one rape was by a gang of people.

Johns meaning John XXIII? I'd avoid it if I were you, damn birds woke me up at 6am each morning when I was there, the rooms are not exactly modern, the food was mediocre. I can't speak for the people there, but the buildings are icky (in it's defense, they have some damn nice chocolate milkshakes there)

EDIT: Also, do all uni dorms/colleges have those gas-chamber showers with virtually zero ventilation?

OK commenting without quoting so try and follow along.

When you succeed with your application you will get an email and you can always check you application on their website.

Johns is John XXIII, it seem real nice on open day and all that but the reality is there. The stereotype is in effect and ontop of that the stereotype is like a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are some nice guys in Johns, that true off everywhere, it’s just Johns has more people that fit the stereotype.

Moving in without a car is not the easiest thing to do, you can take a bus train journey but that depends on how much you want to take (usually more than you can carry with you). See if you can get a parent to take you or something (you also have the problem of what you will do when you need to go home (and how you will get your stuff back)). Unilodge has 52 week contracts so I personally don’t need to take my stuff back (but I do pay for the room even when I am not there). I also have a friend who will be using part of it as a storage space during the break. The one thing I may be able to offer is a ride from a town called Wodonga but no guarantees yet (contact me closer to the date and I’ll see if I can arrange something).
I don’t know about student moving services but that might be OK, don’t have a clue on pricing and the like.

To the person looking for my essay on unilodge, I don’t think it’s here, I can seem to be able to find it (and I’ve looked at my usual forums as well )

This pretty much describes a LOT of Australian colleges in a nutshell.  Hence UniLodge wins.  :p

(not really - again, it just depends on your own needs.  If having pristine living conditions is valuable to you, then UniLodge.  Personally speaking, I found Johns fine when I lived there, and Burgmann was decent enough when I hung around - in balance, I know plenty of people who can't wait to move out)

does anyone live in a hotel? LOL

hotel vs unilodge, your thoughts?

EDIT: @chanstheman: thanks. i honestly think 50%+ of the stuff i'd want to bring would be textbooks .... Are you sharing a room at unilodge? are you currently working?
