me thinks a govt system will be better, then there will be no profit driven incentive (or limited inventive, as we are all well aware the police especially likes money), the govt should just take over the system and run it themselves, rather than blowing tax-payers money on a useless stupid company...

that was out of love to connex, of course :P

Communist words spoken by a communist :P

What is wrong with profit-driven incentive? Almost every industry in the world is profit-driven. The problem is not greed, or a desire for profits: the problem is the natural or "technical" monopoly. I think that various public transport systems should be run by competing companies (I believe they are now: buses by SITA, trains by Connex, trams by Yarra Trams, for example.) Given there is also private transport, such as cars and taxis, there should be sufficient competition to Connex, providing a genuine threat to supplant its operations with cheaper and more effective substitutes. This should be enough to kickstart Connex into providing a more competitive service.

However, obviously something has gone wrong now. I'm not sure what it is, because I haven't researched the issue, but I do not believe that government intervention will fix the problem (because it rarely does). I believe that deregulation is a better idea. Environmentalism clearly conflicts with this, as greenies push for public transport subsidies, which just allows Connex to spend less effort and money, while still earning as much (due to subsidies).

Connex won't be here much longer thank-god!

What makes you think that? "The Government will extend the existing contracts with Connex and Yarra Trams for a further 12 months until November 2009" [http://www.busnews.com.au/index.cfm?storyid=32392&cp=displaystory, via Wikipedia]
They have only extended the contracts long enough so that they can find a new operator. Ill try find some links to back up my point.
Basically its a short term deal and not a long term solution.

"Victorian Labor Premier John Brumby said on August 21 that he will only extend his government’s contracts with Yarra Trams and rail company Connex until the end of 2009, after which there will be a world-wide tender for private operators of Melbourne’s public transport systems."

Part of (or affiliated with) the Socialist Alliance... definitely not an organisation I want to be near.

If you're interested, continue this by PM, because this is going to get off-topic (my bad).

I'm communist and PROUD!!!!!!
lol...
good to see connex go
but i'm suspecting if anyone can fix our train network, the "star" infrastructure is not suited for the current system, we need to somehow incoorporate rings around as well...

*50 years later*
mao says: yes, ring infrastructure would definitely help, but we're still planning...

lol @ communism

And I notice that every time it rains, public transport becomes almost instantaneously useless. Maybe connex caused the drought?

I catch the train heaps, but the only time this year where I've had to go on a bus service was at the start of the year when all those trains were taken off the tracks due to soapy water or something (so I was late on the second day of school, lol). Additionally, I've experienced one cancelled train (on the morning before methods exam 2, though thankfully I was still about 2 hours early for the exam) and countless late trains. Although, sometimes late trains are not such a bad thing because you can catch an earlier train that came late.

I've noticed when it becomes really hot, they use the trains that don't have air-conditioning.
