I am worried about failing the same unit a second time...

Hi all,

I am in my second year of an Eng/Biomed degree at Monash. I failed ENG1001 last year semester 2 and I think there's a chance the same thing has happened this semester. I am so so scared, I don't know what the process is for someone in my situation. Is there really a chance I could be excluded? I am so worried and freaking out. I have read the Monash website on the procedure if a student fails twice but I don't really understand - does every student get asked to attend an APC? does every student get a notice of referral and hearing? How likely am I to come away from this positively?

Please please give me some advice, I am so so so scared and have no idea what to do.

Thank you  :'(

First of all, your results aren't out yet so don't panic. Is there any chance that you've failed other units? You'll only be called in for an APC at the end of the year, and considering that you're in engineering you'll only be called in for the APC if you fail a unit 3 times/fail half your units in a given academic year.

That doesn't mean it's the end though, I'd highly suggest going to engineering student services for course advice and study skills workshops, despite how intimidating they might be it's for your own good. Good luck!

I don't think so. Two of my subjects were biomed, and I'm pretty sure I did fine in those. The other engineering unit I did was ENG1003 which I think I did well in too. It's only ENG1001 I'm freaking out about.

considering that you're in engineering you'll only be called in for the APC if you fail a unit 3 times/fail half your units in a given academic year.

Wait really?? so if I do fail, I won't get a hearing notice or be called in for an APC at all (assuming I do well next semester if I do fail this semester)? Is this an engineering-only thing?

That doesn't mean it's the end though, I'd highly suggest going to engineering student services for course advice and study skills workshops, despite how intimidating they might be it's for your own good. Good luck!

Absolutely, I will be doing this 100%. I need to get myself back together - I feel like I've been stuck in a rut for a long while.

Thank you so so much for replying!!

APCs are normally only a year end thing. For engineering only you need to fail a core unit 3 times before being called in for an APC.

I have failed again. My friend told me her friend had to write a letter explaining why he had failed after he had failed a second time (which is where I’m at now). I am worried I will have to do this even though one of the replies above said I won’t have to. I am so scared. I don’t know if I have two or three chances...does anyone have any advice or insight into what will be happening? Please help!  :'(
