Drastic Math Improvement, Is it Possible?

Hello, I'm currently a student in year ten whom has chosen, Specialist and Methods as subjects in Year 11. My predicament is that i'm not fantastic at maths and i'm definitely not the typical student who would pick specialist or methods however i enjoy math so i decided to. I work hard and i'm willing to put in countless hours a week just practicing maths however i worry that i wont be able to catch up and become better than those who are also choosing the two stated maths. I'd just like some opinions on this? If anyone had ever been in a similar situation and come out on top?

Thanks for your time! :)

Hi, what are your typical test scores for math? Are you better at some topics than others? You might find it a bit difficult to keep up but if you really do put in the effort, you can do really well. I am currently in a Year 9 Accelerated class (Doing Year 10 work) and I have the option to complete VCE over 3 years so I am doing General 1/2 next year and Methods 1/2 and 3/4 the following years. I am not completely fantastic at math but I do enjoy it like you, hence me doing General 1/2 first. All in all, if you are willing to work hard and you enjoy it, there is nothing to stop you!

Yes, you can definitely improve - if no one improves from year 10-12 they may as well assign study scores in year 10. Since you've chosen spec/methods because you enjoy math, want to do well in it and prepared to work throughout the year you are already ahead of those who only chose spec for the scaling.

What are your study score aims for both of the subjects?

Whilst quite high i am aiming for a 35 raw in specialist as it will benefit me immensely during my currently chosen uni course as for methods I am aware that only the top 9% out of the state will get above a forty in any given subject so i am aiming around a 37 raw for it.

I understand that i am quite ambicious however i imagine if my goals we're low and i was aiming for the bare minimum then there is really no point me even attempting to take specialist and methods.

I am definitely better at certain topics in comparison to others however based on test scores its quite hard to gauge as only recently have i begun to actually study for maths and attempt to improve in my own time which whilst is sooner than most at my school still isn;t quite ideal

If you are willing to work hard, anything is possible! It helps to have a passion for the subject and a reason for doing it (which you certainly seem to). You seem motivated and driven, so I have no doubt you'll get there. I also chose to take spesh next year (Year 11), despite not particularly enjoying the subject, so we can suffer enjoy it together lol...

Yep definitely quite possible! You seem very motivated to do your best in the next two years so I think that will give you the best chance of making your aims if you maintain this sort of motivation.

Based on this attitude alone, I can tell you that you will definitely improve a whole lot.

Whether you will catch up to those around you will depend on how hard they work. I've seen students who scored around the 65 marks range who completely surpassed another student who scored around the 90 marks range. I've also seen those who never seem to be able to catch up to their rivals.

I'd say, dont focus on catch up to those around you. Focus instead on trying to improve your mathematical abilities.

Also, dont forget that you have other subjects to spend time on as well so that might hinder your process on improving.
