My parents want me to do med, but my teachers say that I should do law... I am equally good at the sciences and english, but maths is my speciality. What should I choose to aim for, i am really confused at the moment...

parents?
teachers?

you should decide what and where you want to study. Medicine and Law are very different, so having them as a dilemna is a tricky situation. Research the courses, Researching a course you are tuly passionate about should raise your motivation.

Research medical courses, and law degrees and see which one you find more appealing.

If you are interested chemistry, then biology/medicine may be a better choice?

Medicine and chemistry go hand in hand. Chemistry can even be mroe helpful than biology at some situations.

Just beware, that both law and medicine are subjects which require you to be passionate about them - law moreso.

I found myself in a similar situation, where i was a passionate debater (A grade swanny in 2010 - same school) and loved persuasive pieces in english. However i am no pursuing medicine as i too was a student who adored chemistry.

I would advise you to do medince based upon your passion for chemistry. DAV debating, although fun, is perhaps not the best motivation for a career in law.

Either way good luck!

I'm still claiming you'd be better with law

Really? I've gone two years and I've hardly had to use any chemistry. Reason why I don't tutor Chem despite some requests is because I've actually forgotten most of it having not used it in so long. Most of Medicine is explained just at a Biological level as the chemical details are usually unimportant for clinical use. For example, in pharmacology, we just learn the mechanism of action in terms of what receptors a drug would bind to, rather than the specific chemical structures which cause such binding as pharmacists would learn. Chemistry is generally only of use in research and such. That being said though, Biology and Chemistry are quite closely related (with some grey areas in determining what falls under which - hence the subject 'Biochemistry') and having a passion in one tends to lead to a liking for the other to an extent. Just be prepared for a lot of rote learning though - a key feature of Biology really which isn't as prominent in Chemistry.

hmm sorry i guess i meant "biology and chemistry go hand in hand". either way, chemistry will definietly be to some degree helpful for medicine, and to little degree helpful in law.

anyhow, i always felt that biology was just a complicated and specific asepct of chemistry. I view biology as a specialised area of chemistry to be honest. But your right, i know that in the medical courses you will not be expected to learn the VCAA chem curriculum. certainly aspects such as the schrodinger model, valence ions, and galvanic cells will probably not be a big focus.

C'mon I thought this was basic stuff already covered in CSI etc.

And ontopic: biology has been more helpful for every health science related course I've seen, other than pharmacy
