If bromide is Br2
how come hydrogen bromide is HBr?

Bromine is the element you're thinking of. It exists in its diatamoic form, Br2
A bromide is a compound containing a bromide ion (Br-), so HBr is indeed hydrogen bromide

(similar to chlorine, Cl2, existing as chloride (Cl-) in hydrogen chloride (HCl))
