how do we work these things out when it says
lexie, 18, sets her alarm at 4:30 am. if she falls asleep at 11pm she will most likely wake up when in...?

It's most likely going to be REM sleep, because the periods of REM sleep get closer together and longer as we sleep.  :)
Is there any other information given that might suggest otherwise?

I guess you could work out how many minutes there are within that time period which is 390 minutes. One cycle is usually about 90 minutes sot he fourth cycle would have ended at about the 360 minute mark. As we know there are no deep sleep by the 3rd cycle or so, and therefore it's most likely to be REM sleep during that time.
