A program that checks your essays for originality?

I've been hearing about some program that university lecturers/tutors use to check how original (or if you've plagarised) an essay is.
  • Does it exist? I'm pretty sure it does but please confirm, that would be nice.
  • If so, what's the name of it?
  • Does anyone have it?
  • May I have it? It sounds awesome.

By the looks of it, this is probably what Monash uses, considering we definitely already use Blackboard and Moodle which are on their products page.

Yes but I think you'd need to be signed up in one of your classes that uses it, to actually use it
It's not awesome, it's stupid and poopy

Apparently, it works too well. Most of your essay will come back plagarised.

Nah, but it'll waste your time "catching" common phrases and expressions (like "duty of care" and "reasonable foreseeability") and telling you you plagiarised them >_>

yeah turnitin.com

u got to enrol in a class  or pay i think if u want to use it by yourself

its the most stupidest program ever but i guess they need it to ease their mind even though its not the best thing at checking if uve copied

it catches strings of words and it says uve plagiarised.... like "polymerase basic", "NA", "matrix", "avian influenza", "binds to sialic acid" , "virus does not", "glutamic acid" ... all came back as plagiarized lol so it's not very smart... which is a good thing for students i guess lol
but they say they ignore those things so yeah i guess its alright but in conclusion: its stupid

THE WORST PROGRAM EVER! Apparently I plagerised off a student paper submitted to Monash in 2006? Hmm. In saying that, it does catch some pretty big plagerisers, and does so with minimal effort/time.

Haha, apparently I stole 5% of my work from a paper submitted in 2006 in the UK. I should have gotten extra credit for clearly very effective use of research skills in order to find such an obscure work. :D

I know someone who was a trainee for a major newspaper in the 80s. He guessed correctly the editor's password and issued a series of memos [read: edicts] forcing other employees to do funny things. The amazing thing was, he imagined that when the editor found out, he would be greatly rewarded for his ingenuity not, as happened, frogmarched out of the building.
