1. Not sure about Australia, but speaking for the US. Ivy League degrees are a VIP entry card to many jobs.

This isn't the US mate :P Australia isn't nearly as biased.

I think it's all about ranking and variety..for example, you can study mathematical physics at monash and Melbourne while you can't at deakin

I think we really do need more innovation to differentiate the degrees as well. RMIT has done this a bit with some of their courses making you do a certain period of internship or their international relations one ensuring you learn a language. If all universities offer the stock same degrees in the same ways no wonder people just aim for "the best".
