HELP HELP HELP
Hi everyone I'm in yr 11 right now and need some advice about my subjects. My goal is to get ATAR higher then 92 but I'm not sure will I be able to reach that high ATAR with following subjects:Further Maths, Business management , EAL, Ancient History, legal studies. I am not so good at maths so I though about doing Serbian except maths but I don't know is that a good choice because I don't know how Serbian is scaled and will I be able to get high ATAR with that subject, please answer ASAP, thanks.

Mod (J41): Split from English Language thread and moved to relevant board. :)

If your looking for 92+ It doesn't really matter what subjects you choose, even if they all scale down. Just choose the subjects you enjoy so that you will be motivated to put in effort for them (or you like them so much studying is fun ).

I have seen people doing only subjects that scale down and still end up with high 99's even 99.90. The only thing that will be impossible is 99.95 since you need an aggregate over 210 you would need to do a language or specialist maths. So don't change your mind about any subjects only because your goal is 92+. Also just keep an eye on any prerequisites required for the courses that you are considering.

high scaling subjects =/= high atar

And is this definitely the case every year? I 99.65ed from English Language, HHD, Psych, Further, Business Management and VisCom in 2012. Only EngLang scaled up (marginally), and I'm pretty sure I would have 99.95ed had I 50ed every subject. This is certainly the case most years, though.

Great post. +1.

I'd also like to make the important comment that you're far, far more likely to get a 90+ ATAR if you do subjects you enjoy, rather than subjects that just scale up. If I had completed subjects like specialist, methods, etc. I'm quite confident that my ATAR would have been <30; but instead I did subjects I enjoyed and was interested in, and whilst the majority of these scaled down a little, I do not regret my subject choices for a second (and I still got into my first preference) :)

Not completely true, barely anyone who does spesh, chem etc. actually enjoy it. All you need to be able to do is handle the workload and reap the rewards. You don't need to enjoy the subject, you just need to be good at it.

I think Glasses meant that enjoying your subjects provides a source of motivation to study more for them. Enjoyment obviously isn't the only source of motivation to study or do well, there are others such as getting a high atar, gaining admission to a certain course etc. I agree that enjoyment isn't necessary as there are other incentives, but HATING your subjects can override the other incentives to work hard (even if you are a natural good maths/science student, Spesh and Chem requires consistent effort to do well in them, VCE examines your ability to apply a year's worth of course content knowledge to questions rather than general ability). Also note that ability in a subject and not hating it/ somewhat enjoying it are not mutually exclusive (being naturally good at a subject can offer motivation to somewhat enjoy or study for it, liking a subject and studying for it can help you be good at it, being naturally good but hating a subject may decrease the motivation to study for it).

I agree, just don't expect a food tech/drama/music/dance etc. combo to get you a higher atar than if you were to do spesh/chem/methods etc. 9/10 times, even if you enjoy them. Some subjects reward effort more (because less people put effort into them)
