Monash or Melbourne Science?
« on: December 18, 2010, 01:14:14 am »
Got an email from Melbourne Uni saying I have a guaranteed spot at Melbourne next year due to SEAS financial disadvantage. I'm more interested in Monash Science majoring in Zoology which my ATAR has qualified me for however the thought of attending the "prestigious" Melbourne Uni is hard to ignore.
I live much closer to Monash Clayton than I do to Melbourne Uni Parkville.
My parents and rest of family all want me to attend Melbourne Uni.
My Brother is at Melbourne Uni, he said things have become a lot more broader since the introduction of Melbourne Model and if i specifically wanted to study animal based major, Monash might be the way to go.

Where should I go?

Answers of its your future will not help me!!

I suggest you go to Melb Science, purely because you have a stronger cohort thus the people there are GENERALLY more motivated to study.

The broadness of the Melb model really only the first year where you do a general science subject which covers a range of topics but by the time you get into 2nd year, you will choose all zoology related subjects
2011: Bachelor of Science (Melbourne)

the first statement is such a massive generalisation that it really means hardly anything

It seems the only benefit of UoM noted is prestige.

I hardly see that as a winning reason to go to a uni?

Yes I have attended both open days
I talked to very enthusiastic Monash students who loved their course and I also had a friend who graduated a year before me who is currently doing the zoology major and she loves it also

At Melbourne Open day, i was only able to talk to one lecturer who told me about domestic animal science. Also, I will severely struggle in first year as it requires a combination of biology, physics and chemistry, Two of those subjects I never studied

I think Monash would be a better option in your case..Close transport  and you seem to prefer it more.

yes i also attended melbourne's open day and noted on how small it was :S but i just presumed that was so because of all the graduates...

i'd be happy to assist you if you need help with biology/chem/physics :) may i ask which of the three you didn't complete?

You have to study a rather broad first year under monash science too, i recommend the person who posted this thread has a flick through the handbook for both unis and looks at the bachelor of science course.

However, based on what you've said, (travel/you dont like what you have to do at melbourne) i'd go to monash.

Really the teaching gap i believe isnt that big between melbourne and monash, they're both very very good universities all things considered so i wouldnt worry about "prestige".
