Accelerated Mathematics
« on: January 06, 2014, 11:29:59 pm »

I'm currently looking at my subject options for this year and beyond. For some context: I love mathematics, I'd like to think that I'm good at mathematics, and I'm interested in economics/finance. I would like to ask about the benefits and drawbacks of doing either of the following in first year:
Option 1: Accelerated Mathematics 1, Accelerated Mathematics 2
Option 2: Accelerated Mathematics 1 and Calculus 2 (both semester 1), Real Analysis (semester 2)

Would I be missing anything by doing the first option? Similarly, the second? Given I did very well in year 12, would it be silly to do option 2? (I am led to believe that it would not be "silly", as even the best can supposedly struggle with AM 1 and 2)

I'm leaning towards option 2 for two (somewhat related) reasons:
1. I want to do as much mathematics as possible.
2. There are few science electives that I am interested in, so the more mathematics the better.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

Since you want to do as much maths as possible you should do option 2 except replace AM 1 with Linear Algebra. You prob won't struggle with option 1 but doing the 3 subjects separately would give you more time to understand each subject more thoroughly instead of mixing the three into two subjects. (many people here say that it is very fast paced-I did all 3 and I found the pace very comfortable).

If you haven't seen it already, you should read from this post of the UoM thread downwards :)

If you're going to take option 2 (and I suggest option 2 if you read the link from the above poster), take Linear Algebra, Calc 2 in Semester 1 and Real Analysis in Sem2. Don't take Accelerated Maths 1 and then move to a non-accelerated stream, it doesn't make any sense.

I'd actually suggest Option 1, if you are looking for a challenge. You'll find Calculus 2 and Real Analysis to be relatively straightforward given that you did so well in Year 12. Moving from the accelerated stream to the non-accelerated stream is, as Hancock pointed out, inadvisable.

Thank you to everyone for your advice. Reading through the posts that abcdqd pointed out, it seems that I still cover pretty much the same stuff in each option. However, I want to challenge myself (suggesting option 1), and I want to do as many mathematics subjects in first year as possible to lessen the number of science electives (suggesting option 2).

As some kind of twisted compromise, I have a third option which seems extreme (and possibly not allowed)...
Option 3: Accelerated Mathematics 1 and 2 (both semester 1), some Level 2 subject (semester 2)

How ridiculous would this be? From the handbook prerequisites it seems like it would be allowed, but maybe not? It would cover all of my wishes, but would it be too difficult to pull off?

Thanks again :)

Option 3 won't work since AM 2 is only available in sem 2.

Yeah, semester restrictions are what really affected what I wanted to do next year.

Come do AM 1 and 2 with me (:

LOL i actually scored pretty baddly(ish) in both am1+2 BUT IT WAS STILL FUN AND I HAVE #NOREGRETS

XD im not doing eng math anymore;; After AM1/2 being so brilliant, i decided i wanted to do more math and am now doing a diploma of applied math! (haha NEVER wouldve seen that coming before doing AM). So i have to do vector calc and differential equations instead of eng math.

Hey scribble, you seem pretty set on the fact that AM was awesome, but would I miss any of that by doing Calc 2, Lin Alg, and Real Analysis? Don't they cover the same stuff?

idk, we had really amazing/passionate/engaging lecturers in am1/2, and a cohort where a lot of the students have an appreciation for math so i think that made the subject more enjoyable.
ive occasionally crashed calc2 lectures for lols(or rather to hear concepts taught from a different perspective) and found the lectures to have a pretty "dead" vibe in comparison.
