Say I had to VERY similar essay topics, for two different subjects.
If I write essentially the same essay (maybe a little bit different) and submit it for both subjects this is considered plagiarism yes?

How exactly do they police this, considering you have two different tutors for two different subjects? They're not likely to check every single essay with every other essay... how would they even do this? I know people who have done it before and gotten away with it... but really, what are the chances?

to the first question - yes.

To the second question, yes it's possible that you might get away with it, although unis are getting more and more sophisticated with these sorts of things, with programs such as turninit and stuff like that.

So if you haven't submitted either of your essays, and you've only copied from yourself and not web-based content / other essays which might have been submitted previously, then you're not likely to get caught by Turnitin.

And this is only if it is submitted electronically and excludes manual submission, right?

That's exactly what I was wondering up until Glockmeister said:

... Although unis are getting more and more sophisticated with these sorts of things, with programs such as turninit and stuff like that.

Then I got wondering how it would be possible.

turnitin requires electronically submitted work and thats how it checks against a database

Yep unless you have really keen tutors who type them into Turnitin themselves. I guess it depends on the subjects too and whether they're closely related enough that people talk to each other... (e.g. if your essay was really good or crappy, tutor A "wanna see the really good/hilariously bad essay I got from my student?" tutor B: "sure! *reads* wait a minute...")

Fuck turnitin. What sort of shit software calls the "plagirised" bit originality? "1% originality" seriously.

I copied an equation into it because it was in a paper and it just happened to be in the hex of a .exe (turnitin doesnt format office equations properly) from some obscure website from fucking belgium.

fuck you turnitin

ha yeah turnitin isn't very good at stuff like that

it will pick up the most random things and include that in the % plagiarised
although your tutors will not include that in the <10% or whatever rule they have

Words scattered over a page,
silently trapping them in a gilded cage.
Technology advances, OCR scanners,
ICR software will make 'best guesses'
At characters using database and narrow gauges,
Ink splashes and twilight wanes,
silently we find that it was all in vain.
