The Good Rap/Hip Hop Thread (including underground rap)

Usually I'm an indie rock/alternative hardcore fan (Radiohead, The Strokes, Pixies, Clap your Hands Say Yeah etc.) but I hold a place in my heart for good rap.

To me good rap requires a good use of the English language/rhetoric, humour/story telling or fucking sick lines that make you go 'aw shiiiiiiet' and give you unexplainable boners.

Eminem, Weezy, Yeezy and Jay-z are great mainstream examples and LOS or Madvillain 'underground' versions.

Discuss this genre here, no haters.

Starting topic: who is the best rapper alive?

My favourite rappers/hip-hop artists are Eminem, Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Although my all time fav was 2Pac (but he's not alive). My fav songs include 8 Miles, California Love, Changes, and Encore/Curtains Down.

Don't mind rap, but R&B/soul and linkin park style rock is more my type.

The best rapper alive? Most definitely Mos Def, especially with his collaboration with Talib Kweli. His flow is simply unmatchable and his lyrical content, honest and pure. The only way to tell how good a rapper is, is simply by checking out his freestyle, the way Hip-Hop was to be heard.

Mos Def

Eminem is kinda eh. Don't get me wrong, I love his first album as well as his demo but he just went downhill from there. Currently, he is only living in the shadow of his former self. My favourite tracks:

Lately, I've been listening to a fuckload of Sage Francis. Best political rapper around IMO, blows Immortal Technique out of the water. A Healthy Distrust is definitely one of my most recommended albums.

Now it's all about freestyle. Here

RIP Eyedea. The best.

Glad you brought up Madvillain. MF Doom has one of the most unique flow I've ever seen.

Jamie T, Mos Def, Jurrasic 5. I'm not a big fan of late 90s early 2000s era american rap (eminem, Snoop Dog, Dr Dre) HOWEVER the up in smoke tour will never be topped.

At the risk of being lauged out of AN... Anyone into Ausie hip hop? Downsyde, The Hoods, Bliss n Eso, The Herd, TZU, Seth Sentry? They're good and local which means you don't have to wait 3 years for Jay-Z to tour some time... and then pay 500 bucks for a ticket.

I find Aussie Hip Hop somewhat mediocre. They don't really have the same intensity, flow and rhythm of their American/French/British/Canadian counterparts. Considering that we are quite new to the scene, hip-hop here is still trying to define their sound. However, one thing I notice they do well is laid back stuff a la Seth Sentry.

ture, but i find it easier to relate to. i.e. refferences to the bronx and compton I don't realy have anything to do with. But aussie house parties, melb. city and brusnwick actualy relate to me. so I like it more. Just a matter of taste though, and a lot of aussie hip hop artists are kina... ameturish.

Anyone into turntablism?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNZPsGTVgBY

Turntablism is amazing. Should check out the DMC comps if you haven't. A-trak (one half of Duck Sauce) was a DMC champion in his early teens.

If anyone is interested in instrumental hiphop, should definitely give DJ Shadow - Endtroducing a download.

Lil wayne sucks

This is my favourite mainstream rap song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRTB38svF1E
(Hate it or love it - the game)

Mos Def is excellent, should check out some of his freestyle

I like Far East Movement, the music video for Like a G6 is fun.

Nah. DMC is a competition where the best hiphop DJ's compete. I'm pretty sure they host them in every major city (could be wrong).

Been getting into J Dilla - Donuts at the moment. It's shame he passed away so early, his productions were brilliant.
