Limitations/info about Bonded Medical Program

Hey guys,

I was just wondering; can you choose your own specialty under the BMP? And, what areas are under workforce shortage currently (is there a trend in this?)

Start by reading the info booklet and looking at the map?

Yes you can choose your own specialty but this does have implications to where you will be able to 'serve out your time'. The resources posted above is a good place to start. Remember to consider very carefully your options before accepting a bonded or MRBS position cause it is a large commitment and you don't know what kind of situation you may be in a decade down the track, you may easily be able to pick up your life and move now as a student but this may not be as feasible an option later on. I'd also add that you can buy yourself out of a bonded position though so if your deadset on medicine and a bonded position is your only option then this may be an option.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Also, how much is the yearly cost of the unimelb MD program?

I'm not too sure to be honest as I've just HECS debted it, i think it was 10k or so, someone else in the course may be able to confirm this.

On their website it says 50k, so i was a bit shocked. As medical programs everywhere else are way less than that with CSP

If you're an international student it'll be about that. Same if you're local and have a full fee place. Local CSP is 10k a year (with a loan if you want it)

What? How can it be 50k? Even if you're talking about FFP that's still way too high!

Actually I went on the monash info page, and full-fee med there is closed to 49k pa, so yeah, sounds about right.

Cannot be true as Monash does not have FFP

Also, I know someone who completed med as a full fee student at monash a few years ago....hmm...maybe my understanding is incorrect...

It's probably just because they have all their courses in that calculator regardless of whether or not they actually offer the place as a fee paying one. Monash doesn't have undergraduate FFPs though.

That's because that's a very old thread and one of the things the ALP did when they got elected was to make domestic, undergrad FFPs illegal on humanitarian/equity of access to education grounds. Prior to that, they did exist and were a thing, but not any more.
