That chance encounter with Palestine in Italy was a remind that it's travel which turns people from one-dimensional stereotypes, conjured up by the media and politicians, into real human beings.

Hey! I'd say it's figurative language in that first phrase; you don't actually meet Palestine in Italy! :)
