Hello forum users,

My question is as follows: what weighted average mark is equivalent to a grade point average of 4.0?

Kind regards,

there is no straight conversion since your GPA will depend on proportions of HD's, D's etc and WAM is just the weighted average mark.

Assuming by 4.0 you mean perfect GPA? Which is how monash calculates it. For melbourne it is out of 7.

For a 4.0 or 7.0 you need to be getting HD/H1s in every single unit you do that is a score of 80 or greater.

Thanks for a prompt response Sine. Yes I am referring to a perfect GPA. You mention Monash and Melbourne, are their methods exactly the same as in the US? So, if I understand correctly, you would need to only be receiving H1 results to have an equivalent 4.0 or 7.0 GPA? Just a quick side bar: the H1 refers to the score for the course subject and not each specific assignment or exam within it? E.g. if I have a random breadth subject, the overall score would be considered H1 and not the various assignments within it.

I don't know much about US GPA system but I think in high schools a 4.0 is only 90+ scores not sure about unis.

H1/HD is the highest grade avaliable and it's for the whole "unit"/"subject" and not a random assignment or test.

You can't really convert WAM to GPA, since they both require different inputs to be calculated. GPA requires grades, whereas WAM requires numerical grades.

What we can say is that a GPA 4.0 or 7.0 (depending on the system used, but largely the same principles) must lead to a WAM of >80. We can't say the reverse, however (i.e. that WAM >80 means GPA is perfect).

Firstly, what is the requirement to obtain a 7.0 GPA at Melbourne, since that is what they use. (Was not aware of this)

Secondly, would a 7.0 GPA from Melbourne be equivalent to a perfect GPA at a university in the US?

A 7.0 means you achieve an H1 overall for every single unit you take. (Note, you can get under 80 for some assignments, so long as your unit average is over 80 at the end of the semester).

A 7.0 is a perfect GPA so yes, would be considered as a perfect GPA at USA Universities. :)
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

As mentioned, WAM is your average numerical grade, whereas GPA is the sum of your grades. For example, let’s pretend two people do a degree with only two subjects (silly I know, but simplifies the point).

Person 1 gets an 80 and an 80. Therefore:

WAM: 80
GPA: 7

Person two gets a 79 and an 81.

WAM: 80
GPA: 6.75

The difference exists because in the GPA, 80+ is worth 7 but 75-79 is only worth 6.5

Thank you all. It is quite clear now. Just a question about subjects: BIOL10003 is one subject?
