Oral Tips

Does anyone have any general tips on the oral exam? And to past students/students who've already done the exam, have you encounter any particularly difficult/random questions that you weren't expecting?

Also, for the Detailed Study section, how did everyone present their pictures?

Cheers!

I think everything comes down to preparation and confidence. I think it is important to treat the oral as an opportunity to sell yourself, both as a speaker and as a student. If you can get the mental bit sorted, you will be fine. Put the pictures into a folder and hold it to your chest whilst presenting it.

mm..that's what I've been doing, although I sometimes find that it gets a bit frustrating having to flip back and forth, since the examiners might not ask the questions in the 'right' order..

That's true. I only brought along 5 pictures, so it wasn't too bad. What is your topic and do you have lots of pictures?

I have around 5-6 pages of pictures...each containing 3-4 images. Think that's too much...?
Also what's the policy on having characters on the pictures?

That is a bit much. According to my tutor, who is an examiner, she said that it is normally fine, with her, to have a few characters or so , but we didn't take the risk. I remembered we came up with four-character names for each of my chinese bonsais and she made me commit to memory even though we probably would have gotten away with labeling it.

I think be confident with your stuff but also don't forget to relax when you're in there. The examiners are overly nice to make sure you don't freak out, so take it easy.

- Make sure you're visually thinking of everything you're saying just in case you have a tense/gender error, in which case you should correct yourself.
- In general conversation, they really do channel the conversation to the things you've mentioned. So make sure you're prepared to elaborate on ANYTHING you mention.
