done all the methods questions from VCAA?
« on: July 16, 2020, 02:44:53 pm »

i have done a lot of the extended response questions from most of the past vcaa questions and am worried if this will be detrimental to my preparation at the end of the year when i do these exams under timed conditions, as i have already seen and worked through a lot of the questions.

was this a bad idea?

Well, it is slightly early to be doing VCAA exams, but on the flipside, as long as you're learning things from doing the questions then it should be fine. This is because often people won't have time at the end of the year to complete the exams in preparation for the exam anyways so beginning early does have its upside. Also, its unlikely that you will run out of questions to do, since there are an almost unlimited supply of commercial exams that you can do if you've finished all the VCAA ones - though I would've recommended that you began with the commercial ones and left the VCAA ones for later.

Do you remember the questions on your unit 2 exam? What about in your first SACs this year? How about what you had for lunch 3 months ago?

If you answered yes to all three, your memory is insane. But on the more likely assumption you said no - your unit 2 exams aren't that much further away from when your final exams will be, and so when you actually hi to try those exams, you'll probably find you don't remember the questions, and it's basically like doing them fresh

It may mean when you go to do the VCAA ones you'll finish them faster than you otherwise would've but on the other hand you might forget some of the approaches by then. Imo it's worth making sure you do some of the harder commercial exams (you should be able to source these from your school) towards the end of the year to get in unfamiliar exam practice in addition to VCAA exam practice.

People take different approaches to "exam purity" but as long as you're making sure you learn from the questions you're doing and get in timed exam practice you should be fine. It's not worth dwelling on whether an approach was 100% efficient imo - if you've already done it, you've just got to do what you can and doing these questions early is far better than running out of time to do them at the end of the year.

Good luck!

somewhat moot since you've already completed the questions but personally I liked to have fresh exams in order to replicate an actual exam situation since I think that is the best practice you can get. For the vast majority of questions, I don't think this matters too much since most exam questions are somewhat generic as most students would've seen similar questions to them before. For the separator questions if you have gone ahead and learnt how do them I think it could possibly inflate exam scores on the second run-through of them all. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but just something you should be aware of so you can look for other options to practice separator questions in an exam setting.

thanks guys!

i wouldn't have done it but at my school they really encourage going through the vcaa exams and separator questions as well, and i am only now thinking about how it may impact my exam prep.

unfortunately i do feel like i remember all the questions :( i don't think i have touched the 2019 exam though, so i may leave that one for true preparation.

will this be enough? i feel like i've potentially ruined my chances at solving the super difficult questions under exam conditions because i've spoiled all the questions for myself.

again thank you for all the responses, i really appreciate it  :)

Hiii!

Everyone else has given great advice, but I thought I'd just add my comments anyway.

I felt the same when I completed methods last year, as I had pretty much seen questions from all exams (apart from the previous 2 years) when I did exam prep. However, if you havent done them already, VCAA NHT exams (exams done in the northern hemisphere) can be quite useful to do in timed conditions closer to exam time.

Although it differs from my opinion of ideal exam prep I don't think it will severely impact your score as long as you look at what sort of questions you have been getting wrong, taking note of them, learning and trying not to make those same mistakes again.

In some years VCAA can be quite good at making those super difficult questions where the vast majority haven't seen questions like them before and thus can't use prior experience to answer the questions. There is a heap of luck associated with whether someone can do the separator questions on the day or not so I don't think the ability of someone to complete the separator questions on exam day is a great indication of whether exam prep was effective or not.

thanks i'll do that :)

my school has been putting vcaa questions in practice sacs, sac preparation tasks and sometimes even telling us to do specific ones, which is why i've seen a majority of them
