..........I thought you got an interview anyway because you have guaranteed full fee entry to the MD, or at least this is what STONECOLD told me.  I wish you could tag people on VN.

I've heard two different things on that actually, with 99.85 etc.

Regardless, doing BComm and applying for med would be very hard with the prereqs

What have you heard Russ?

I emailed the MDHS asking, and they haven't replied yet, but I am pretty sure my chances at it are finished.

However, for 2012 applicants and beyond (or until the scheme expires), according to an email luken93 received, it seems that they are giving bonus points to SEAS applicants, and if your adjusted ATAR is 99.90 or above (don't ask me exactly where or how they apply these bonus points) then you are eligible for the Chancellors Scholars Program.  I don't want to get peoples hopes up, but if you got a Melbourne National Equity Scholarship, then I would say that you are in for a decent shot at the Chancellors Scholars program, as I believe that they only give out 10 of these scholarships anyway.

That the chancellor's scholars program will drop to 99.85 if demand is low enough. Won't make a difference for you sorry :(

I have a few questions which are pretty similar, it would be great if someone could help answer them.

1. If I try for the MD and get an interview after completing the GAMSAT, if I fail the interview am I allowed to take my guaranteed CSP place for the Doctor of Optometry? (98.00+)

2. If I try for the MD but do not get an interview due to low GAMSAT, am I then allowed to apply for a full fee position in the MD? If I fail the interview for the full fee MD, will I still be able to take my guaranteed CSP place for the Doctor of Optometry?

Thanks.

EDIT: Wooo I'm furniture :)

1. If the Doctor of Optometry requires an interview and you FAIL your MD interview then no. If you just don't get a high enough score in the interview for an MD place, then yes.

2. No, because to get a FFP you have to nominate it as an option prior to interviews. If you don't get an interview on the strength of your GAMSAT/GPA you can't get an FFP. Same as above.

Just make sure you actually apply to all of the said courses separately. The course you is easiest to 'pass' the interview will be full fee guaranteed MD, since this is literally just a 'pass'.

Optom and CSP MD will be harder, since the interview for these are actually competitive.

What do you think my chances are with 99.85 + I've been offered a Melbourne Access Scholarship (not National Equity)?

That is strange...I would have thought 99.85 + SEAS would give you an Equity Scholarship.  That is what I got, but they weren't/haven't been interested in giving me the guaranteed entry.  It might change this year though, so just hold tight I guess.

You are in the running for Monash yeah?   Hopefully you just get in there and that will be the end of it.

It is a pretty generous offering that Melbourne give.  A fair few people qualify for the scheme, and whilst not all of them want MD/DDS, a lot do, so they would probably be reluctant to give out any more spots than they have to.  Wouldn't be surprised if they elevated it to 99.95 only in a few years time.

^ and Monash didn't offer me any equity-type scholarship either... *shrug* My SEAS is probably ranked somewhere in the middle of the scale...hopefully I'll get a second round excellence and equity or Med faculty scholarship or uni-wide merit schol that I can use for MBBS, after I reject the science scholarship monash offered me. *fingers crossed* I think I've got a pretty good chance of Monash med, so yeah, hopefully that will be the end of it.

I know a scholarship is nice, but tbh it is not really that much money.  I would trade mine up in a flash for a spot in med.  I'm not sure how Monash Med scholarships work, but I am under the impression that they only give them 99.95ers.  But it seems they have changed things a lot this year, so I'd say you have a good shot at one there too.  But the ~$15,000 that an Access Scholarship is worth is seriously nothing in the scheme of things.  5 year MBBS at Monash and you will have earned well over 100k in the following 2 years which you would otherwise have to spend at Melbourne studying.

And yeah, I was the same.  Monash hate me and offered me nothing either.  Not even to do biomed or science there.

And also, congrats on your score!  It's nice to have an ATAR buddy. :)

That is what Carl from the MDHS student centre has told me.

I will be emailing him soon for both confirmation on that, and also, if you get offered your guaranteed FFP in the MD, does that prevent CSP offers from other unis.  The answer had better be NO!

Yeah I'll defs take MBBS if I get it regardless of scholarships. Also I'm pretty sure 99.95ers aren't eligible for Med faculty scholarship cos they've already got the Excellence Scholarship, which possibly gives me a chance, considering they offered me a science scholarship - they only gave out 4 last year! It is nice to have an ATAR buddy! You're my 4th ATAR buddy so far :D

None, afaik.

Wouldn't be surprised if they elevated it to 99.95 only in a few years time.

I am extremely confident that it won't, they want to give away as many of these as possible.

Interesting actually. Post and ask on the MDHS facebook wall because it could be a complex answer. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't but, if you have to apply through GEMSAS and they'll just guarantee your FFP acceptance then yes it would. As it stands, if you get offered UoM FFP you can't reject in favour of a CSP elsewhere.

Guaranteed fee place MD is not done through gemsas. You apply directly to melbourne uni, so I don't think it should affect your other offers.

EDIT: Wooo I'm furniture :)

I called UoM just now, regarding your second question
He said that provided you get 99.00+, and you do well on the interview, you are guaranteed a FFP at the uni provided your grades are at least 75%
The better you do at the interview, and the higher your grades are, the greater chance you have at receiving a CSP

Whether or not you do the GAMSAT will have no effect on your chances of receiving a CSP
The GAMSAT will make absolutely no difference to your chances of getting selected into the MD with a CSP.

That's what he said... anyone want to confirm this?

This is provided you have a guaranteed CSP place, ie 99.90+. If you do not have this, and want a CSP place, then you must sit GAMSAT.
