BEng Oil and Gas

Hello,

For someone considering entering the field of petroleum engineering, how beneficial would it be to specialize in oil and gas in Monash's bachelor of engineering? All petroleum engineering degrees seem to be outside of Victoria, and this seems to be the only related one I can find, but I cannot find any reviews or opinions on it.

So anyone who has studied it, considered studying it or knows someone studying it, drop your thoughts below.

I guess you've got to think about where this goes long term. Definitely have no specialist knowledge myself about this topic, but this is an industry that will inevitably contract in the future as we switch from fossil fuels to renewables. Very unlikely you'd be able to make a job out of it for life, but then I guess the relevant question (and one I can't answer) is whether or not those skills are transferrable to other areas. Maybe?

That's true. The only reason it interests me is because a) good money (80k straight out of uni) and b) combines my love of maths and science. I've been reading a lot of mixed things about it, stats show the job to be growing but like you said we're moving more into renewable energies. I guess someone who has similar ideas as me could do something like mechanical engineering which is interchangable between many fields, incuding the two we mentioned.

Just a disclaimer though, I'm not set on entering this field im just trying to have a look around at some of my options, find jobs and careers which may interst me and this area seemed a little hazy.
