Is chemistry needed for engineering?

Hi,

I'm going to year 11 next year and am currently choosing my year 11 VCE subjects.
I'm planning on doing engineering but am a bit confused about the prerequisites for engineering.

Could someone please let me know if chemistry is a prerequisite for engineering in either Monash or Melbourne uni?

Thanks in advance!

From page 28 of the Monash engineering prospectus linked below, chem or physics can be accepted as an engineering prereq. However, some engineering double degrees only have a chem prereq: https://www.monash.edu/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/518381/2022-engineering-undergrad-courseguide.pdf
VCE 2016-2018

2017: Biology [38], Further Maths [44]

2018: Methods [37], French [38], Chem [40], English [44]

UMAT: 56/43/80, 57th percentile (LLLLOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL)

ATAR: 98.1

2019-2021: Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash (Scholars), minoring in Chemistry

GAMSAT September 2021: 65/67/86, 76 overall (98th percentile)

2022: Chilling

2023+: Transfer to teaching degree

Hi! To do engineering in Melbourne University you need to enrol in the Bachelor of Science (however, there are a few engineering majors offered in the Bachelor of Design), and do an Engineering major through it. Chemistry itself is not a prerequisite for the course, however, you need to have a study score of 25 in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Specialist Maths. (Apart from the methods and English preqs)

So no, you do not need to do chemistry to do engineering at Melbourne University, as long as you are doing one of Bio, Physics or Specialist.

However, if you are planning on doing Chemical engineering I strongly recommend doing Chemistry, as Chemistry subjects are a requirement for the major.

You can find more information here: https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/undergraduate/bachelor-of-science/

Hope this helps!
