I'm really not sure what to do here guys. I'm only in year 11, so GAT marks don't really effect me, but I'm still disappointed to get such a low mark.
Written communication- 27/50
Maths/science- 46/50
English/humanities- 50/50
I have no idea why I received such a poor score for written communication, and I'm thinking of getting a statement of marks to see why.
Is there any way to contest that mark? It's not particularly impactful but it looks horrendous on my record and I'm not sure if I deserve it. I definitely could have written some bad essays but I don't think they were that bad!
Any recommendations you could give me for what to do next would be great.
I got a 49 in written comm so here is my advice that I can't verify the value of:
For text 1:
- jot down the ideas that each text is related to eg. Globalisation, monetary value, culture, history
- understand the connotations of each text eg. Pulling bread out of the oven -warm, home, hunger
- understand the techniques and impact of different features Eg. Displaying expertise, use of diagrams
- find the most salient motifs to write each of your paragraphs on Eg. one might be on cultural value
- aim to show your understanding of written conventions Eg. Structure, grammar, spelling
- aim to show your understanding of relationships between the various texts
Text 2
- don't pick all 3, it'll be too difficult to keep it organised
-
stay on topic - the prompts are deliberately broad so that everyone can engage with them
- this is where you draw on your understanding of written techniques, use persuasive devices
- control your tone and make deliberate choices with your wording and structure
(I opted for trying to convey expertise so I used authoritative language, jargon, elevated lexemes etc. )
- make a brief plan before you write if you have the ideas to - it'll help you maintain control and direction
Another point, I didn't leave much time for math/science and performed worse than I would've like in that area. Make sure that you make deliberate decisions about time management.
Last year I got a 28 in written comm. (and no, I didn't use the above ideas in that year), so I guess my result must've been "horrendous" too
