Possible Amygdala Question
« on: May 28, 2011, 09:49:08 pm »

So I went to a lecture on Thursday and the presenter Ross Down seemed quite convinced that their might be a question about the Amygdala on the Mid-year exam even though it's not in the study design.

So my question is this what other than associating emotions with memories does it do? and do you guys reckon we might need to know any more than that?

Thanks in Advance.

amygdala - responsible for the formation and consolidation of emotional memory through it's close connection to the hippocampus which it activates to consolidate a strong emotional memory. It also links emotion to memory and is responsible for fear + aggression; importantly fear conditioning.

There's going to be a huge argument about it in vcca....cause apparently the guy who wanted in the course wrote it too late...and it's not in everyone's text book :S. So not all the text books have information about the amygdala. :S

But yeah ^ the following are right.

I went to a lecture yesterday from access education and a teacher from the audience said that VCAA said it wasn't meant to be a part of the study design where the speaker said its best to have the information just in case.
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."
- William James.

I have also heard that the amygala has a direct role in the formation of new long-term procedural memories, linking emotions with memories and activating the hippocampus and thus plays an indirect role in the formation of new long term declarative memories. I think knowing those three things and knowing that is a part of the medial temporal lobe in both cerebral hemispheres is enough knowledge for the exam.

Imagine the extended response was about the temporal lobe... then we'd have to know about the Amygdala because it has a role in activating the hippocampus hence assisting in the formation of declarative "explicit" memories, and forming emotional memories such as fear and phobias. Along with the cerebellum, it also has a role in procedural "implicit" memories.

Implicit memories is another way of saying procedural memories or memories that you are unable to explain. Eg. "Can you please explain to me how to tie a shoelace?" You can't explain, can you? =P That is implicit memories.

Explicit memories are memories that you are able to explain (hence why the word Explicit and Explain both begin with the letter E). They are your declarative memories because you are able to explain episodic (Where did you celebrate your 16th birthday?) and semantic memories (Who is the current prime minister of Australia?).

I hope you can kinda get the jist of it, I'm bad at explaining XD

Wait, so does the amygdala play a part in the formation of procedural memory?
