Subject Selection

Hi guys, so it's that time of year again where every year 10 and 11 is trying to sort out their subject selection, and accordingly, I'm after a bit of advice!

So this year, I've completed two 3/4 subjects, psychology and religion and society, and am headed into year 12 next year and am certain about the following subjects:
- Legal studies
- Literature
- Business Management
But am unsure whether to complete global politics (distance ed), Australian politics (distance ed) and/or English here.
I am completing 1/2 English this year, but have not been doing that great - particularly in contrast to lit. So basically, I'm trying to work out whether I should complete 1 or 2 of the above subjects that I'm unsure about.

I understand that by completing 7 subjects in total, one of these will have no effect whatsoever on my ATAR, however I feel like I should at least try and complete 5 next year, and drop 1 if it gets to much. --- So in this scenario, the question is which subject(s)

All advice, past experience, etc. welcome!!!

Hello there! I too am in year 11, going into year 12 next year :)

Assuming you're quite an english/humanities based student yes? In my honest opinion, if you have options at your school, I'd recommend them, it can be hard to pick up a subject by distance in year 12, especially if you haven't done it before, and generally it is better in terms of the help you get, the resources you get and learning by a teacher actively being present as opposed to reading content off a webpage is more effective. In my personal experience hence, I'd recommend whatever you can do optimally in school.

On the other hand, if you really don't want to take anything in school, you can opt for distance. In your situation, if English is your only alternative for in-school education, given you don't seem to be doing too well, maybe go for distance. Especially if you are completing literature next year, it might be easy for you to lose motivation to work in English if you do better in your other English (literature)!

Also, if you pick up distance and find that you can handle it/enjoy it, and the subject content appeals to you, you can give it a try and as you said, if that doesn't work it, its always easier to drop a distance subject!

So ultimately it is your decision but I hope I've provided you with some perspective. I was also wondering if there's a reason you aren't taking maths? you might be able to pick up further maths if you want? I understand there might be reasons you have already considered and removed this option, just putting it out there!
But yeah, I'd recommend something in school as your best bet (general opinion, you might love distance!). Maybe with business, accounting might complement it, consider things like that if they appeal to you and if they're available. Otherwise, if you hate english and accounting (or whatever else), take a distance course and see how you go, drop it if you can't handle that. You can also try taking both a distance subject and one in school and trial them for maybe 2-4 weeks and pick just one that you want to go with, but ensure your school is okay with this first!

Hope I've helped :)

Hi there, thanks for your reply!! I've actually completed a distance ed subject this year, and intend on continuing on with it next year (that is out of the question, haha) - I have quite enjoyed distance ed to be honest and find that I learn just as effectively as in a regular classroom setting. So that isn't as much of an issue for me.

I have not completed maths this year, and that is particularly because none of the courses I have even considered have had maths as a prerequisite, and honestly, cannot stand and am awful at maths.

And yes, I do prefer english and humanities subjects.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

If you like distance and have done it this year then that seems like the way to go :) given the subjects you most wanted to do, pick one that complements your other subjects best! For you I'd recommend in this situation to do one of the politics (I'm not a humanities student so I can't offer you any advice!) instead of English. Also yeah its cool you don't need to do maths, I'm not judging just for your confidence! Just checking if you wanted to consider it as an option. But yeah it sounds like you're happy with distance and enjoy humanities a lot so you'd do well in the politics :)
I assume you're picking these up in distance without doing 1/2 right? Just make sure you personally are okay with that, I don't know how it is for humanities classes as I'm not taking any, but for sciences it can be hard to jump straight in to the 3/4. I'm sure you'll do well regardless of what you choose though! :)

Oh well hopefully that's all good then :)
You are most welcome, let us know what you end up picking!
Off the bat I'm just going to throw out that world politics looks a little more interesting than Australian. I know nothing about either so definitely consult with someone more educated in that field lol ;)
