The image of a number is the 'y-value' or the value the function takes with that number (eg. )

The pre-image of a number is the 'x-value' or the value of the variable when the function equals that number (eg. )

My question is...whats wrong with my first one.. how do i decide to take the 3x away instead of dividing everything by 3 first, also in the last equation i moved 7 to the other side but it wouldnt happen if i chose to move 2 to the other side. How do i chose which no to move?
