Maybe individual posts could be rated?

That was my point. Did you read my message above? :)

I'm hoping my "publicly reveal reasons for karma" suggestion is debated a bit more. Otherwise, this same problem of random karma, smiting etc. will continue.

Otherwise, propose a better system in which we do not rely on people to do the right thing (as maxleng shows, this can't be trusted. Even our "good" mod brendan has baselessly accused me of being a communist in a smiting.

New system to be implemented:

- Everyone gets 1 karma to give out PERIOD per day to whomever they please.
- Negative karma is removed.
- Total transparency for karma givings and their reasons.

You can't smite people - only offer positive karma.

That works. For what it's worth, you have my support.

The point of karma is to identify the most beneficial contributors (and the negative karma those that troll or act stupid repeatedly).

I reserve my opinions about the 1 karma straight limit. But at least the system above prevents abuse of the karma system. The joke of smiting people repeatedly for fun is wearing off, I just want to see a system that works, for the objective it is designed to achieve.

- Negative karma is removed.
Negative totally removed, or use a karma total rather than the separate +ve and -ve?
I think we should change it so there's only the one karma total, but keep it so that people can still subtract from someone's karma (as marpick said, for trolls or whatever) :)

Like quota/credit? Perhaps the quota/credit is determined based on the user's status. That is, Hero Members get more credit than Jr. Members.

yeah something along those lines. like say you weren't online for a couple of days, instead of coming back and only having 1 point you have maybe 5 points over the period of time you were away
