Hi guys,

Can anyone explain why the fuels with lower oxidation states release more heat upon combustion??

TIA xxx

All combustion reactions are oxidation reactions (Fuel is oxidised by O2), and oxidation results in an increase in oxidation state (or higher oxidation number).
Therefore, logically if a fuel has a low oxidation state it has a potential to be oxidised to a greater extent (or has greater potential to increase its oxidation state):. can produce more energy upon oxidation/combustion.

Hope that helps.
