A bit late, but everyone needs to know of this great man!

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (1935), "Butzi", the creator of the Porsche 911, has died, 76 in Salzburg, Austria. He was one of the founding fathers of the iconic Porsche brand, beginning his work in Ferdinand Porsche's engineering offices, whom was also his grandfather. He proved his talent early on with his ability to sculpt cars, and was the first to sculpt a successor to the Porsche 356, Porsche's first road-going car. His creation of the 911 was a timeless design, with its sloping roofline, timeless lines, and most importantly, the rear-engined layout. The 911 went on to become arguably the greatest sportscar ever, with countless race victories over the 50 year history of the car, and is today still as relevant as it was back in 1963, when the first 911 rolled off the production line.

As you may (or may not) know, the Porsche 911 is one of the most iconic cars ever, and the passing of the creator of this masterpiece is quite a sad thing.

Here is a picture of how the 911 has evolved over the years:

And here is a picture of the newest 911:

Long live this great man!

Long live the porsche <3

Knew you would post first :P

Anyway, here are some of the most iconic cars that have worn the Porsche badge:

Porsche 356: The first official car to wear a Porsche badge

Porsche 917: This car lead Porsche to their first Le Mans victory in 1970

Porsche 959: The first Porsche supercar. 450hp in 1986 meant this car had twice the power of a 911 Turbo at the time. It was the most powerful and most technologically advanced car in the world

Carrera GT: The second Porsche supercar, 2004-2006

Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" - The final hoorah for the aging original 911 chassis, the car this was based on was 15 years old at the time, and was competing against, and beating, prototype cars of the day. I got to see this car in person twice last year, it is incredible :)

Porsche 550 Speedster: This is a car infamous for being the car actor James Dean died in. And yes, that is Mr. Dean himself in the picture!

Porsche 911 GT2 RS: With 620hp, this is, to date, the most powerful Porsche ever

Porsche 918: Due to start production next year in 2013, this car will be Porsche's 3rd supercar in their 50 year history. It is arguably the most beautiful Porsche ever. Paint it red and you might mistake it for a Ferrari. Believe it or not, it's a hybrid; it has two electric motors, one at the front, and one at the back, and a normal combustion engine in the middle. Together with all three running, this car will produce over 700hp. It will cost about £650,000 - $1,000,000 AUD :P

LOL. It's too bad Clarkson hates Porsches. The Carrera GT did blow him away though :) Maybe because the engine was actually in the right place in that car.
