Hi Guys,
How many words in a paragraph would you recommend?
I always get feedback from my teacher that my paragraphing isn't great, and I wanted know how many words in a paragraph other people recommend.

Hey MarkThor, what essay structure do you usually use (i.e. how many paragraphs?). The average would probably sit between 200-300 words depending on how fast you can write. What do you mean specifically about your paragraphing not being great?  :)

Hi ssarahj, I usually use 2-4 paragraphs, depending on the essay. My teacher normally thinks that I should split my paragraphs up more.

2-4 paragraphs is totally normal. At this point if you're happy with them, then just go with that. I haven't heard of or read any 5+ paragraph essays as of late :)

Hey Jake, did you go into your exams with a prepared essay, or just knew certain techniques and analysis of those certain techniques really well, and applied them to any question?

Hey!

I didn't aim to memorise my essays. I had my quotes, my essay plans, my thesis etc. ready to go, but that was it. However, I have to admit, I basically did end up memorising all of my essays. I had written the exact same essay out so many times (assessments, half yearlies, trials, even a practice paper or two) that I had basically learned them word for word. As such, I pretty much just spouted them off in the exam, with adjustments for answering the question. So I guess my answer is: a little of column A, a little of column B!

Wow! Nice!

did you keep repeating them in your head and read them out loud, or keep writing them out?

Pretty much just writing them out, although I think I did a total of one past paper. The essay plans were my main form of English study.

Jake I was wondering about how you talked about memorising a ‘Golden Sentence’ but how do you write one? :-\

Basically, you want to figure out exactly how your sub-point links to your thesis. "An exploration of the theme X will result in an understanding of Y" etc. Just keep writing out beautiful sounding sentences until you get something you're a fan of! Might be a better question for the English thread though aha
