Hi

What happens if you don't do well in unit 3 for any subject but do well in unit 4  and the exams?

Thanks

What does 'not well' actually mean? In terms of marks, ranking or actually failing the entire unit altogether?

If you are talking about receiving an N overall for a unit, this could potentially have ramifications. A quote from the VCAA Frequently Asked Questions:
Quote
However, VTAC advises that for the calculation of the ATAR, students must satisfactorily complete both Unit 3 and Unit 4 of an English sequence.

So essentially to be awarded the VCE, you have to complete 16 units overall (which basically means four subjects of Unit 1-4.. or an equivalent, at least). If you fail a unit completely, you don't have much wiggle room.

In terms of ranks/marks - all that matters is your rank. Is it possible to recover from poor performance in Unit 3? Of course it is. Is it an ideal position to be in? Not really. The exams still remain the most important aspect of a subject.

Well it depends on the subject. For most subjects, Unit 3 is around 25% of your study score, which sounds like a lot, but does not take into account that your SAC scores are moderated based on the strength of your cohort.

If you are looking at 40+, you would want around a moderated SAC grade of at least B+ for Unit 3 which, when combined with strong A+ grades in Unit 4 and the exam will bring you up into that range.

Obviously your external SAC grade cannot be determined as internal grades are inconsistent between schools, but in the end you should try your best and see what happens.

Unit 3 isn't over yet and if your school is anything like my school, you should have a SAC for each subject left. So try your hardest for those SACs and it could really boost your unit 3 SAC score. Anyway, assuming you do poorly for unit 3, it's still possible to get 40+ if you ace the exam and your unit 4 SACs. But I wouldn't recommend putting so much pressure on doing well for the exam and unit 4. I'd say just try your hardest for the rest of your unit 3 SACs, since this could really help jumpstart your way into unit 4.
